The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox ACTIV gives Chevy’s compact SUV a more adventurous personality with all-terrain tires, a more premium cabin, strong standard tech, and available all-wheel drive. It is not a hardcore off-roader, but it makes a convincing case as the most interesting gas-powered Equinox trim.
The Chevrolet Equinox has always occupied the practical middle of the compact SUV world. It was the dependable pair of white New Balance shoes in a parking lot full of hiking boots, running shoes, and the occasional designer sneaker. Comfortable? Certainly. Exciting? Not exactly.
That changed with the latest-generation Equinox, which arrived for 2025 and carries into 2026 with only minor updates. The last gas-powered Equinox I drove was over four years ago, when I tested the 2002 RS AWD model. It wasn’t bad. But the 2026 model is a game changer for the badge, it get a sharper, more squared-off styling, adds a standard Drive Mode Selector across the lineup, and brings Polar White Tricoat to the ACTIV and RS trims in place of the previous Iridescent Pearl Tricoat.
But the ACTIV trim is the most interesting of the bunch, it actually made me want a midsize Chevrolet SUV for a daily. Chevrolet positions it as the adventure-minded Equinox, and at $33,600 before destination, it starts at the same MSRP as the pavement-focused RS. Its key visual and functional upgrades include 17-inch machined wheels, all-terrain tires, Evotex and sueded microfiber seating surfaces, and an available two-tone white roof.
Equinox ACTIV: It Looks Great
The 2026 Equinox ACTIV finally gives Chevy’s compact SUV a proper point of view. It wears its rugged styling well, with a bolder grille, blockier stance, dark lower cladding, and smaller wheels wrapped in tires that look more suited to a gravel road than a valet stand.
The ACTIV is not trying to be a Tahoe Z71, and that is a good thing. It has just enough outdoorsy flavor to separate itself from the regular grocery-getter crowd without pretending it is about to ford a creek on the way to Whole Foods. The available white roof is a nice touch, giving the ACTIV a little vintage utility charm.

Cabin And Technology
Inside, the Equinox ACTIV trim gets one of the better interiors in the Equinox lineup. The Evotex and sueded microfiber seating surfaces give the cabin warmth and texture, especially compared with the usual gray-and-black compact SUV penalty box. The Maple Sugar-style interior treatment works because it feels casual and upscale without becoming fussy.
Chevrolet also deserves credit for the screen layout. Every 2026 Equinox gets an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 11-inch digital driver information center, with Google built in, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and available wireless charging.
The cabin is practical, too. Chevrolet lists up to 63.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume, a folding 60/40 split rear seat, and hidden underfloor cargo storage. Rear-seat room is respectable, though competitors like the Hyundai Tucson offer more total cargo capacity and rear legroom. Edmunds notes the Equinox has 39.9 inches of rear legroom and 63.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, while the Tucson stretches to 41.3 inches and 74.8 cubic feet.
Power & Performance
Every gas-powered 2026 Equinox uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 175 horsepower. Front-wheel-drive models use a CVT, while all-wheel-drive versions get an eight-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet also lists available all-wheel drive and up to 1,500 pounds of towing capacity when properly equipped.
This is where the ACTIV’s boots are better than its lungs. The 1.5-liter turbo is adequate, not inspiring. Around town, it should feel perfectly livable, especially for school runs, commuting, errands, and weekend trips. But if you are expecting the all-terrain tires and rugged trim to come with any meaningful extra muscle, you will be disappointed.
Car and Driver reported that an all-wheel-drive Equinox reached 60 mph in 8.6 seconds in testing, while Edmunds recorded 8.7 seconds for an AWD Equinox. Both outlets describe the powertrain as acceptable but not especially energetic.
Fuel economy is similarly decent rather than class-leading. Car and Driver lists the 2026 Equinox at 26 to 27 mpg combined, depending on configuration. Edmunds reports EPA estimates of 27 mpg combined for front-wheel drive and 26 mpg combined for all-wheel drive.
The Equinox comes well-equipped on the safety front. Chevrolet says the 2026 Equinox includes more than 15 standard safety and driver-assistance features, including Chevy Safety Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam. Standard features also include Side Bicyclist Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Park Assist, HD Rear Vision Camera, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and Rear Cross Traffic Braking.
For family buyers, that matters. A compact SUV lives or dies by how easy it makes the boring parts of life, and the Equinox comes with enough driver assistance to make traffic, parking lots, and school pickup lines less miserable. That last one may be the real torture test.

Where It Fits
The 2026 Equinox ACTIV makes the most sense for buyers who want the look and light-duty usefulness of a more outdoorsy SUV without moving into something thirstier, larger, or more expensive. It is not a Ford Bronco Sport rival in any serious off-road sense, but it does offer more personality than a standard Equinox LT.
The bigger issue is competition. The Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-50, and Subaru Forester all crowd this space. Some offer better fuel economy, some offer hybrids, some offer more cargo room, and some offer more convincing adventure credibility.
But the Equinox ACTIV has a clean argument: good styling, lots of standard technology, a comfortable cabin, useful safety features, available AWD, and a price that does not require smelling salts.
The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox ACTIV is not the most powerful, most efficient, or most capable compact SUV in its class. But it may be the most compelling version of the gas Equinox because it gives the vehicle something it has often lacked: personality.
It looks good, the interior feels more thoughtful than expected, the tech package is strong, and the ACTIV trim adds just enough rugged charm to make the Equinox feel less anonymous. The powertrain is the weak link, especially in a segment increasingly filled with hybrids and punchier turbocharged options, but for most buyers, it will do the job. Think of it as a compact SUV with a field jacket, not a climbing harness. It can take on a fire trail, not the Rubicon. And for a lot of people, that is all they need.
