The new limited-edition Bulova Shelby Racer Chronograph takes its inspiration from the polished aluminum version of Shelby American’s 50th Anniversary Daytona Coupe, translating the commemorative car’s hand-formed metal bodywork, competition gauges, and racing stripes into a collector-focused timepiece.
That distinction matters. This is not a watch based on a bare-metal version of the original 1960s race car. Shelby’s competition Daytona Coupes wore period racing liveries. The polished aluminum appearance belongs to the later 50th Anniversary continuation car that inspired this watch.
Built Around an American Racing Icon
The original Daytona Coupe was developed because Carroll Shelby needed something faster and more aerodynamic than the open Cobra roadster for Europe’s high-speed circuits. Shelby American designer Peter Brock created the coupe body around the Cobra 289 platform, using a sharply cut tail and more efficient roofline to reduce drag. The first car was constructed at Shelby American’s Venice, California, shop, while the remaining five original coupes were built by Carrozzeria Gransport in Modena, Italy.
The Daytona Coupe made its competition debut at Daytona in 1964. By the following season, Shelby American had turned the aerodynamic experiment into a championship winner. On July 4, 1965, the Cobra program secured the World Manufacturers’ GT Championship, defeating Ferrari and giving Shelby American a place in international racing history that no other American automobile manufacturer has duplicated.
Shelby American marked the 50th anniversary of that achievement in 2015 with a limited run of 50 continuation Daytona Coupes. Buyers could select fiberglass or hand-formed aluminum bodywork, with the aluminum version starting at $349,995 before the drivetrain was installed. Today, these polished aluminum versions are valued at over seven figures and seldom seen.
It is that anniversary machine, with its exposed and highly polished aluminum body, that provides the visual foundation for Bulova’s latest Shelby watch.
Bulova Shelby Racer Chronograph
The centerpiece of the new Shelby Racer Chronograph is its mirror-polished dial. Framed by a high-polish stainless steel case, the reflective surface recalls the anniversary Daytona Coupe’s carefully finished aluminum coachwork.
The chronograph subdials are modeled after the functional gauges found inside the car, giving the watch the appearance of a compact instrument panel rather than simply placing an automotive logo on an existing design.
Bulova carries the theme into the stainless steel bracelet. Its contrasting polished and brushed finishes form two parallel bands, a subtle reference to the double racing stripes associated with Shelby competition cars.
Around back, a glass caseback insert carries Bulova and Daytona Coupe logos. An additional padded brown leather strap is included for owners who prefer a warmer, more traditional driving-watch appearance.
It is a restrained approach by licensed-watch standards. There is plenty of Shelby identity, but most of the connection comes through materials, finishing, and functional details rather than a dial covered in badges.
A 262 kHz Engine for the Wrist
The automotive references are supported by one of Bulova’s most recognizable pieces of modern watch technology.
Inside is the company’s proprietary high-precision quartz movement, which operates at a frequency of 262 kHz. That is eight times the frequency of a conventional quartz watch movement, helping provide accuracy measured in seconds per year rather than seconds per month. The technology also allows the chronograph hand to move with a smooth, fluid sweep.
The sweeping hand gives the watch some of the visual character associated with a mechanical chronograph, while maintaining the accuracy and durability expected from quartz. It is a fitting choice for a Shelby collaboration, where performance ought to involve more than a stripe and a cobra emblem.
Bulova’s connection to motorsports also predates the current Shelby partnership. The company traces its American racing involvement to 1957, when it served as NASCAR’s official timing partner. During the 1970s, Bulova also sponsored the Mosport Park Formula Ford championship in Canada.
The Next Chapter in the Bulova and Shelby Partnership
The polished Daytona Coupe watch follows the blue-and-white Bulova Shelby Racer Chronograph released as part of Bulova’s 150th anniversary celebration. That earlier 7,500-piece edition was inspired by the 1967 Shelby GT500 and used a bullhead-style case, striped rubber strap, and the same high-frequency Precisionist technology.
This new model moves in a different direction. The bright racing colors have been replaced by polished steel, the rubber strap has given way to a bracelet, and the inspiration shifts from Shelby muscle to one of the most significant American endurance racers ever built.

The Shelby Racer Chronograph arrives in a special presentation box with the additional leather strap and a 1:24-scale silver-plated Shelby Daytona Coupe model.
Including the model car makes the package feel less like a standard watch release and more like a small automotive collection. It also gives buyers a clear view of the polished coupe that inspired the watch, even when the full-size version is parked somewhere considerably more exclusive.
The limited-edition Bulova Shelby Racer Chronograph is available now through authorized Bulova retailers and Bulova.com. The retail price is $1,425. The company has not announced the total number of watches that will be produced.
The result is a Shelby watch that knows precisely which car it is honoring. It is not a recreation of the painted Daytona Coupes that conquered Europe in 1965. Instead, it celebrates the polished anniversary machine that exposed the shape, craftsmanship, and hand-formed aluminum beneath the famous blue paint.
Sometimes the best way to appreciate a great design is to strip away the color and let the metal speak for itself.
