How Henry Ford’s Obsession With Precision Inspired The BALL Roadmaster Perseverer

There are watches built to impress and watches built to endure. The BALL Roadmaster Perseverer belongs firmly in the second category, a timepiece that feels less like an accessory and more like a tool for people who believe motion matters and progress is earned.

That philosophy is not marketing spin. It is rooted in a very real relationship between BALL Watch Company and one of the most consequential figures in automotive history. Henry Ford, the man who put the world on wheels, carried a BALL pocket watch tuned to Webb C. Ball’s railroad standards. Precision mattered to Ford because precision was freedom. If machines ran on time, people could move farther, faster, and with confidence.

The BALL Roadmaster Perseverer draws a straight line from that era of industrial grit to the modern wrist. It is inspired by Ford’s refusal to quit in the face of failure, bankruptcy, and relentless criticism, and by the belief that accuracy under pressure is not optional. It is essential.

BALL has always occupied a unique place in that story. After the 1891 Kipton, Ohio, train collision, Webster Clay Ball was appointed Chief Time Inspector, establishing railroad timing standards that shaped modern chronometry. Those same standards guided the pocket watch Ford relied on daily. That watch, fine-tuned to Ball’s commercial accuracy requirements, was built for the common man but engineered with uncommon discipline.

The BALL Roadmaster Perseverer carries that legacy in steel.

Its 40mm case is forged from 904L stainless steel, a material prized for its resistance to corrosion and wear, and finished with a combination of brushed and polished surfaces that feel purposeful rather than decorative. The design nods quietly to 1970s industrial watchmaking, with an integrated bracelet and a clean, horizontal tapestry dial that favors clarity over clutter.

At night, the watch reveals its most distinctive feature. Sixteen micro gas tubes line the hands and hour markers, glowing continuously in darkness without charging or exposure to light. It is the same philosophy that guided railroad inspectors and early automakers alike. Visibility should never depend on ideal conditions.

BALL Roadmaster Perseverer Features the BAL RR1103 caliber

Inside, the automatic BALL RR1103 caliber is protected by the brand’s patented Amortiser anti-shock system, shielding the movement from impacts up to 5,000Gs. Anti-magnetic protection, a sapphire case back, and 100 meters of water resistance reinforce the idea that this is a watch meant to be worn, not babied.

For enthusiasts who appreciate cars built to be driven and machines designed to solve problems, the BALL Roadmaster Perseverer makes sense immediately. It is not flashy. It is confident. It values reliability over novelty, discipline over decoration.

That mindset would have resonated with Henry Ford

He believed that perseverance was not a slogan but a daily practice. Failure was simply part of the process, not a reason to stop. BALL’s connection to Ford is not a licensing exercise or a clever footnote. It is a reminder that the tools we trust shape the way we move through the world.

The BALL Roadmaster Perseverer is not trying to reinvent watchmaking. It is doing something harder. It is honoring a tradition of accuracy, toughness, and belief in progress, qualities that built railroads, powered factories, and put America on the road.

For those who still believe that machines should earn their place, it feels right at home on the wrist.

  1. Solid background and heritage, but I’m not sure I buy the idea that railroad history automatically makes this watch special today. Specs are good, sure, but there’s a gap between inspiration and real-world feeling.
