Subaru has never had a problem selling the idea of adventure. The brand built its reputation on wagons, boxer engines, all-wheel drive, ski-town parking lots, muddy trailheads, and dogs that somehow always look better behaved than yours. But electric vehicles have been a tougher frontier for the “go anywhere” brand to tackle. The Solterra arrived as a cautious first step, less off-road and more city commuter. The 2026 Subaru Uncharted feels more like Subaru finally leaning into having a refined city-focused EV.

The Uncharted is Subaru’s new compact electric crossover, positioned below the Solterra and offered in Premium, Sport, and GT trims. The Premium is the entry model with front-wheel drive and 221 horsepower, while the Sport and GT add dual-motor all-wheel drive and 338 horsepower. Subaru lists the Sport at $39,795 before destination, which matches our Coastal Wolf Gray Metallic test car’s base price.

Our test car added $475 premium paint and Subaru’s $1,450 destination and delivery charge, bringing the total to $41,720. In today’s EV market, where the words “affordable electric crossover” often come with enough fine print to wallpaper a dealership finance office, that price feels refreshingly direct.

Subaru Uncharted: Trading Hiking Boots For A Sharper Suit

The Subaru Uncharted does not look like a shrunken Solterra, and that is important. It has a lower, sleeker, more athletic profile than Subaru’s larger EV, with a fastback-style roofline and cleaner surfacing. Subaru calls it an electric crossover SUV, but visually it sits somewhere between a sporty hatchback, a lifted wagon, and a compact utility vehicle.

In Coastal Wolf Gray Metallic, the Uncharted Sport looks particularly good. The color gives the bodywork a technical, almost outdoor-gear quality without trying too hard. It is the kind of gray that feels less “rental counter” and more “storm rolling over the mountains.” For $475, it is a worthwhile upgrade.

The Sport trim also gives the Uncharted the hardware and stance that make the whole package work. It includes Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, dual-function X-MODE, low-profile roof rails, and a more purposeful appearance than the base model. This is the trim that feels most like a Subaru, which is to say it looks like it would rather be parked next to a trail map than a mall directory.

That number matters. Compact EVs can feel appliance-like when they are tuned only for efficiency, but the Subaru Uncharted Sport has the kind of immediate response that makes electric driving enjoyable. It is quick without being theatrical. There is no fake drama, no shouting exhaust note, no need to cosplay as a rally driver on the way to buy mulch. You press the pedal, the car moves with authority, and the all-wheel-drive system keeps it composed.

Subaru says the Uncharted can deliver up to 338 horsepower and offers standard fast charging, with a 10 to 80 percent charge in about 28 minutes under suitable conditions. The Sport, with dual-motor all-wheel drive and 338 horsepower, is expected to trade some range for traction and performance. During my test, we achieved a range of 246 miles on a full charge.

That is a fair trade for this particular vehicle. Subaru buyers expect all-weather confidence, and a front-drive-only Subaru just doesn’t seem right. The Sport trim restores the familiar Subaru formula: usable size, real traction, and the ability to handle weather, light gravel, and bad decisions from other drivers.

Subaru also includes battery preconditioning to help optimize cold-weather charging speeds, which matters in the real world. EVs are often judged in ideal conditions, but Subaru buyers tend to live where winter is not a rumor.

Interior: Modern, Useful, Not Overdone

Inside, the Subaru Uncharted Sport feels properly modern without going full spaceship. The Sport trim’s StarTex upholstery is the correct choice for a Subaru EV. It fits the brand’s practical side better than delicate leather would. This is a cabin designed for wet jackets, coffee cups, hiking boots, and children who treat upholstery like an open canvas.

The large center screen handles most of the tech experience, but the cabin does not feel barren. Some EV interiors try so hard to look futuristic that they become cold and joyless. The Uncharted avoids that. It feels contemporary, but still approachable.

The low-mounted battery helps the vehicle feel stable, and Subaru’s all-wheel-drive tuning gives it confidence in poor weather or on loose surfaces.

No, this is not a WRX on electrons, and it is not pretending to be. It is closer to the spiritual successor of the small, useful, slightly quirky Subaru that built the company’s reputation in the first place. Except now it plugs in, has 338 horsepower, and does not leave you explaining head gasket folklore at dinner parties.

Subaru says the Uncharted offers 8.2 inches of ground clearance, available dual-function X-MODE with Grip Control, and all-wheel-drive capability on Sport and GT trims. That puts the Uncharted in a useful place among compact EVs. It is not a rock crawler, but it is more capable on rough roads than many low-slung electric crossovers, and will get you to Ski Santa Fe or the local trailhead up a dirt road with confidence.

For most buyers, that is exactly the right formula. The Uncharted Sport is built for dirt roads, snowy commutes, national park weekends, wet boat ramps, and the occasional poorly maintained ranch road. That is where Subaru lives.

At $41,720 as tested, our Uncharted Sport lands in a strong position. The base Premium is cheaper, but the Sport feels like the sweet spot because it adds the power, all-wheel drive, X-MODE, roof rails, heated steering wheel, upgraded driver-assistance technology, and more durable interior materials. For a vehicle that is going to be popular in the Pacific Northwest, those are all selling points.

The GT adds luxury features like a panoramic fixed glass roof, ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a digital rearview mirror, but not everyone needs the extra content. For many buyers, the Sport will be the one to get.

After driving it daily for a week, the 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport strikes me as the EV Subaru needed. It is smaller and more approachable than the Solterra, more powerful than expected, and more aligned with what Subaru buyers actually want: all-weather confidence, useful capability, honest practicality, and just enough personality to avoid becoming another anonymous electric pod.

It is not perfect. Range will matter, especially for buyers comparing it against longer-range EVs, or if, like me, you just happen to live in Texas and range really matters. The charging experience will depend heavily on location, infrastructure, and real-world conditions, so that might limit some of your adventures. But with NACS compatibility, fast-charge capability, 338 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and a sub-$42,000 as-tested price, the Uncharted Sport makes a strong first impression.

The name may be a little dramatic, but the vehicle is not. It is practical, capable, quick, and sensibly priced. In other words, it is a Subaru. It just happens to be electric.
