Limited to just 20 pieces, the latest creation from the independent Swiss manufacturer combines a minute repeater, a one-minute flying tourbillon with a cylindrical hairspring, a fully skeletonized hand-wound movement, and a miniature aventurine and mother-of-pearl dial inside a 40 mm titanium case. It is an impressive amount of watchmaking packed into a relatively restrained footprint.
Cosmic Rain: Putting the Minute Repeater Front and Center
The minute repeater is traditionally one of watchmaking’s most discreet complications. Its hammers and gongs generally remain hidden inside the case, making themselves known primarily through sound. Moser has taken a different approach.
Here, the hammers and gongs are positioned on the dial side of the watch, allowing the wearer to see the mechanism operate as the repeater sounds the hours, quarter-hours, and minutes. That arrangement required H. Moser & Cie. to rethink the architecture of the movement, balancing the desire to expose the striking mechanism with the acoustic requirements of a minute repeater.
The watch’s extensive skeletonization makes the most of that work. Bridges have been opened up and excess material removed, providing a nearly unobstructed look through the HMC 909 movement. In a watch built around mechanical theater, hiding the interesting bits would have seemed rather rude.

A Little Piece of the Night Sky
Against all that exposed metal sits a surprisingly colorful focal point.At 2 o’clock, Moser has placed a small domed aventurine sub-dial decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays. The effect provides a visual counterpoint to the otherwise highly technical architecture surrounding it.
Aventurine glass gets its characteristic sparkle from tiny copper crystals suspended within the material. For the Cosmic Rain, fragments in two colors are applied by hand to a domed base to produce Moser’s familiar fumé gradient before undergoing multiple firings.
The process continues with thin strips of mother-of-pearl. Each strip is cut, curved, and individually positioned within the engraved surface of the dial. The resulting pattern resembles streaks of light crossing a deep blue night sky, which explains the Cosmic Rain name without requiring a marketing department to work terribly hard. Each dial is assembled individually, meaning subtle variations should make every one of the 20 watches slightly different.

A Cylindrical Tourbillon at 6 O’Clock
Below the dial, at 6 o’clock, is another major piece of the watch’s mechanical architecture: a one-minute flying tourbillon.
More unusually, it uses a cylindrical hairspring.
The design traces its heritage to precision marine chronometers of the 18th century. Rather than lying primarily flat like a conventional balance spring, a cylindrical hairspring rises vertically around the balance staff.
Its geometry is intended to improve isochronism, helping the oscillator maintain consistent timing as the spring expands and contracts.
Moser’s hairsprings are produced by Precision Engineering AG, the company’s sister operation specializing in regulating organs and escapement components. Each cylindrical hairspring must be individually shaped by hand and requires considerably more production time than a conventional hairspring.
It is the sort of detail that most people will never notice from across a dinner table, but at this level of watchmaking, that is rather beside the point.

The HMC 909 Movement
Powering everything is H. Moser & Cie.’s three-dimensional HMC 909 hand-wound manufacture calibre.
The fully skeletonized movement measures 33 mm across and 9.6 mm thick, contains 415 components and 35 jewels, and operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour. Despite powering both the time display and minute repeater mechanism, the HMC 909 offers an impressive 90-hour power reserve.
The main plate and bridges feature Moser’s double-stripe decoration, while the movement and individual components are finished and decorated by hand. Thanks to a sapphire crystal caseback, the mechanical show continues on the reverse of the watch.
Titanium Keeps Things Modern
Despite the historic complications inside, the Cosmic Rain doesn’t look particularly old-fashioned.
Its 40 mm case is made from titanium and measures 14.4 mm thick, a reasonable diameter considering the complexity of the movement within.The watch is fitted with sapphire crystals front and rear, while the minute repeater is activated through a sliding bolt in the side of the case.
A grey hand-stitched nubuck alligator leather strap and titanium pin buckle complete the package.The result feels more contemporary laboratory than traditional drawing-room complication.
Where Art Meets Engineering
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Endeavor Minute Repeater Cylindrical Tourbillon Skeleton Cosmic Rain is how deliberately H. Moser & Cie. has chosen to expose its different disciplines.
The minute repeater provides sound. The flying tourbillon supplies constant motion. The aventurine and mother-of-pearl dial brings color and light. The skeletonized movement turns the rest of the mechanism into part of the design.
None of these elements is particularly easy to execute on its own. Putting all of them into one 40 mm watch is something else entirely.
Only 20 examples of reference 1909-0501 will be produced. H. Moser & Cie. did not include pricing in its announcement.
