2026 Toyota Prius PHEV Nightshade Edition Review: Style, Range, And Value

A few years ago, Toyota transformed the Prius and Prius Prime, now the Toyota Prius PHEV, from an ugly duckling to quite the svelte hatchback. An extensive overhaul gave the Prius more power, better range, a more user-friendly interior, and a more cohesive design. New for 2026 is the Nightshade Edition. Based on the XSE trim level, Nightshade comes in three colors and pairs that with 19-inch black alloy wheels, black badging, door sills, door handles, and bumper inserts. At $38,000, the Nightshade is only $1,000 more than the XSE while giving the Prius PHEV some unique touches.

Toyota Prius: Eco Styling Elevated

That starts with the exterior. As previously stated, the now handsome Prius Prime in Nightshade Edition trim has plenty of black touches. The front has an angular design with LED headlights, along with both blacked-out badges and a lower grille. Three colors are available for the Nightshade Edition, including no-cost black and mustard yellow, plus an optional white paint. This Prius PHEV came in the Karashi yellow, which paired well with the black door handles and door mirrors. A sloping silhouette gives the Prius PHEV an aggressive look at the expense of rear headroom, plus the hidden door handles help with aerodynamics. Standard for the Nightshade Edition is 19-inch black alloy wheels. Smoked LED taillights, Prius, and PHEV badges in black round out the Nightshade Edition appearance upgrades. It’s an excellent-looking hatchback, and the Nightshade Edition gives the Prius more visual appeal.

Inside the 2026 Toyota Prius

Inside, the dark theme continues with a fully black interior contrasted by ambient lighting. Heated seats in the front are standard. There are buttons everywhere, which makes the design a little disjointed. A majority of the buttons are on the steering wheel, which is lower than most vehicles to make up for the floating driver display. While it is nice that there are so many different options within the driver display, the placement is too low, forcing the steering wheel almost into your lap. That said, the wheel is heated and has controls for the infotainment system, adaptive cruise control, and media. Standard is an eight-inch touchscreen, but this Prius had the optional $610 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The display is crisp and simple to use.

Thankfully, climate controls are separate from the touchscreen and logically laid out. Two USB-C chargers are in the front, along with a wireless charger. The shifter has a B feature, which will be discussed later on. Buttons around the shifter include Auto Hybrid or EV, a button for Hybrid or EV, auto-hold, and parking brake. Materials are fine for this price point, but nothing too special. Rear seats are a little cramped thanks to the sloping roofline, but there is enough room. Optional for the Prius PHEV Nightshade Edition is a $1,000 fixes glass roof, which lets in a good amount of light. A six-speaker sound system is adequate but not the best in class. Overall, the technology in the Prius PHEV is fine but lacking one key feature: a charge feature for the battery. Instead, the Hybrid button does have a battery charge, but not by a lot.

Power and Performance

Powering the Prius PHEV Nightshade is a 2.0-liter inline-four and two AC motors producing a combined 220 horsepower. A 10.9-kWh lithium-ion battery pack is included. With front-wheel drive and a CVT, the Prius PHEV accelerates from 0-60 MPH in a respectable 6.5 seconds. Power delivery is linear, and the engine does a great job juggling between hybrid and electric modes. Four drive modes include eco, normal, sport, and custom. Most journeys were normal. Body roll was kept to a minimum, and cornering was good for a hybrid vehicle. With the battery charged up, the Prius PHEV can do around 39 miles of electric range. Once it’s running in hybrid mode, the Prius PHEV can achieve over 40 MPG even in 30-degree weather. Safety features include adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, emergency braking, and lane keep assist.

The 2026 Toyota Prius PHEV starts at $34,000 for the SE. Add another $3,000 for the XSE and an additional $1,000 for the Nightshade Edition. With such a small price difference, the choice between XSE and Nightshade Edition comes down to color preference. Whichever trim level chosen, the Prius PHEV is a stylish plug-in hybrid with good tech. Hopefully, Toyota brings back the ability to charge the battery with the engine.
