Carroll Shelby To Step In For Moss At Amelia Island Concours d 'Elegance

Due to the unexpected accident that has left Sir Stirling Moss hospitalized with two broken ankles and other injuries (Click Here for More on that Story) will not be able to attend the 15th annual Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance. In his place American racing legend Carroll Shelby as agreed to fill in.

The featured guest this year is Richard Petty, winner of the NASCAR Championship seven times and a record 200 races. Many of Petty’s famous No. 43 race cars will also be featured at the show. Moss was to honored in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of his win at the Cuban Grand Prix and was suppose to speak at a seminar titled “Three Greats” that would feature, Moss, Petty, and Drag Racer Don Garlits.

Concours founder and co-chairman Bill Warner said Shelby, famed for his AC Cobra and Shelby Mustangs will “substitute” for the injured Moss at the “Three Greats” seminar as well be at Sunday’s Concours. Moss sent an e-mail from his hospital bed expressing great sadness that he would be unable to attend, however, Shelby would be “a great and worthy substitute”. Shelby also raced in the 1957 Cuban Grand Prix in a Ferrari 410, where he came in second to Stirling Moss.

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance’s events run from Friday through Sunday, March 12 to 14, at and around the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Sunday’s Concours, with 285 cars and motorcycles, is 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $50 for adults, $20 for children 12 to 18, proceeds support Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
