Shelby Honored at Riverside Legends Event

Racers from a bygone era invaded the Inland area for next weekend’s tribute to Carroll Shelby.
Shelby, the designer of the Ford Cobra and Sports Illustrated driver of the year for 1957, was in attendance at Legends of Riverside II, Friday through March 28, as well as last year’s honoree, Dan Gurney. Every annual event takes place at the Riverside International Automotive Museum, which is dedicated to preserving the memory of Riverside International Speedway. The museum is bringing vehicles in for the event, including Cobras with racing history, said museum director Bruce Ward. One Cobra 427 is worth $5 million to $10 million, he said.

More than 50 drivers and racing personalities have confirmed attendance. They range from Cannonball Run founder Brock Yates to Parnelli Jones and Linda Vaughn, “First Lady of Drag Racing,” sitting at my table.

Shelby, after an autograph session with the other legends, sat down for an interview about his long history in racing. Legends include a film festival, a mixture of mainstream features such as 1974’s “Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry,” and more specialized documentaries, with topics such as lawnmower racing. Citizens Business Bank was the title sponsor of this year’s event, Hagarty Insurance, and several other automotive-related businesses.

The number of tickets is limited to around 150 people, allowing for direct interaction with the Legendary drivers and automotive personalities. Planning has already begun for next year’s Legends of Riverside Event, and I know we will be attending again.
