The question is not simply which one costs the most. It is which features actually make sense for the way you drive.

There is something refreshing about a piece of automotive electronics that doesn’t immediately demand your phone number, Bluetooth connection, software login, and permission to send notifications. The RAD 390 is that detector.

Cobra positions the 390 as its essential protection model. It detects X, K, and Ka-band radar and uses the company’s LaserEye system to detect laser signals from both the front and rear of the vehicle. The new model also gets Extreme Mode, which increases sensitivity and allows faster responses when maximum detection performance is desired.

Compared with the previous RAD 380, Cobra says the 390 offers improved detection performance and greater range. It also gains USB-C connectivity, a redesigned adjustable adhesive windshield mount, and support for future firmware updates.

What you don’t get is equally important. There is no Bluetooth connection between the detector and your phone, no built-in GPS, no automatic GPS false-alert lockouts, and no Digital Signal Processing. The display is a traditional seven-segment LED rather than an OLED screen.

The Drive Smarter app can still be used separately on your phone, but the RAD 390 itself does not communicate with it.

That makes the 390 particularly appealing for someone who wants a detector for an occasional road trip, a second vehicle, or perhaps a classic car where simplicity is part of the charm. Mount it, plug it in, and drive.

It is the modern equivalent of buying the manual-transmission version because you don’t need every available option.

The RAD 490i is where the lineup takes a significant technological step. Introduced in 2026 as the successor to Cobra’s popular RAD 480i, the 490i gains enhanced Digital Signal Processing, broader K and Ka coverage, improved false-alert filtering, USB-C connectivity, a white OLED display, Bluetooth, and Extreme Mode.

Cobra says the new detector offers up to 15 percent more range and coverage than the previous-generation RAD 480i while producing 22 percent fewer unwanted alerts. Those figures are comparisons with its predecessor rather than guarantees of a specific detection distance, since radar performance varies considerably with terrain, traffic, the radar source, and road geometry.

More important for everyday usability is its Bluetooth connection to Cobra’s Drive Smarter app. Once connected, the RAD 490i can tap into a network of Cobra and Escort users reporting radar, laser, speed traps, red-light cameras, and other alerts. Drive Smarter also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

The important distinction between the 490i and 700i is that the 490i does not have built-in GPS. Its Defender database and certain location-based features depend on having the Drive Smarter app connected. It also lacks Cobra’s automatic GPS-based AutoLearn false-alert system.

That distinction matters if you regularly drive the same route. Independent testing also suggests buyers should temper Cobra’s marketing claims with real-world expectations. Vortex Radar found the 490i’s response time dramatically improved over the older 480i and praised its ability to react quickly in High and Extreme modes, but criticized its overall sensitivity and range compared with stronger competitors.

The 490i therefore occupies an interesting position. It offers considerably more technology than the 390 for a modest jump in price, but it doesn’t deliver the built-in intelligence that makes the 700i noticeably more seamless.

Cobra RAD 700i: The One That Learns Your Drive

The RAD 700i is Cobra’s flagship RAD detector, and its biggest advantage isn’t simply range. It is memory. The built-in GPS allows the detector’s AutoLearn system to recognize stationary false alerts that repeatedly occur at the same location. Pass the same shopping center every morning, and the detector can eventually recognize the automatic-door radar rather than treating your commute like an electronic emergency.

That ability to quiet itself over time is one of the 700i’s most meaningful advantages. The RAD 700i combines Cobra’s premium antenna platform with Digital Signal Processing, variable speed sensitivity, advanced IVT filtering, Bluetooth, Drive Smarter integration, and the Defender database of red-light and speed-camera locations. It also supports MRCD and MRCT Multaradar systems.

Drivers also get a customizable five-color OLED display and Cobra’s EZ Mag Mount, making it easier to remove the detector when parking or transferring it between vehicles.

A recent firmware update added Extreme Mode and substantially improved response speed. Cobra says Extreme Mode can deliver 75 percent faster response times, while its testing showed significantly fewer false alerts than a competing detector. Those are Cobra’s own test results, but the update demonstrates one advantage of buying a detector that continues to receive software development several years after launch.

Independent testers have generally viewed the RAD 700i more favorably than Cobra’s less expensive models. Vortex Radar currently ranks it as its best radar detector under $300, praising its filtering, automatic GPS lockouts, Bluetooth connectivity, and overall feature set. Its testing found sufficient everyday range while noting that enthusiast-oriented competitors can provide greater outright sensitivity.

Popular Mechanics reached a similarly balanced conclusion in 2026 testing, recording frontal detection distances of up to roughly a mile in its testing while noting that actual warning distances varied dramatically depending on terrain and enforcement equipment.

That is worth remembering with every radar detector. There is no magic mileage number. Hills, curves, traffic, instant-on radar, and the location of the enforcement vehicle can completely change how much warning any detector provides.

Which Cobra Radar Detector Should You Buy?

Buy the RAD 390 if you want simplicity.

The RAD 390 makes the most sense for drivers who simply want radar and laser alerts without turning another device in their car into a connected technology platform.

It is inexpensive, firmware-updatable, uses USB-C, and now includes Extreme Mode. For a weekend car or occasional interstate traveler, it covers the essentials.

Buy the RAD 490i if connectivity matters more than GPS.
