In a major shakeup of its factory racing efforts, Porsche Motorsport has announced that it will concentrate on two cornerstone programs beginning in 2026: the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in North America and the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The move marks the end of the brand’s factory involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

The decision underscores Porsche’s twin priorities: North America and electrification. Competing with the 963 prototype in IMSA, the brand reaffirms its commitment to endurance racing and its most vital global market. The legendary 24 Hours of Daytona will remain a centerpiece of Porsche’s factory campaign, operated under Porsche Penske Motorsport.

Meanwhile, the all-electric Porsche 99X Electric will continue to compete in Formula E, serving as a testbed for the company’s next generation of road-going EVs. “Formula E remains a crucial development platform,” said Dr. Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Development at Porsche AG. “This competitive environment accelerates innovation for our electric sports cars.”

The introduction of the next-generation Formula E car in Season 13 (2026/27) is expected to offer more technical freedom and greater performance potential, an evolution Porsche plans to leverage.

Although Porsche Penske Motorsport will exit the WEC at the close of the 2025 season, the brand’s customer racing programs will continue to thrive. Privateer teams campaigning Porsche GT3 and GT4 machinery remain integral to the marque’s motorsport DNA.

“Motorsport has always been part of who we are,” said Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport. “We race to innovate, to test ourselves, and to inspire. With the 963 in IMSA and the 99X Electric in Formula E, we’ll continue pursuing victories that define the Porsche legacy; both on the track and in the future of performance.”

  1. Glad I got to see Porsche running WEC at COTA at least once. Them leaving the FIA WEC is a major blow to that series.

  2. Honestly surprised they are leaving WEC for IMSA, but they must be seeing where the value really is.

  3. Whoa, Porsche ditching the WEC? Must be following the money, probably heading straight for the nearest Moutain Dew stand. IMSA sounds like a wild ride, though maybe a little less… *exotic* than leaping across continents. And focusing on the 99X Electric in Formula E? Clever move, putting the future electric sports car development bed right where the sun shines… and the charging stations are! Formula E might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but good on them for pushing boundaries and making it more exciting than watching paint dry. racing to innovate, indeed!
