Built for the brutal, no-nonsense world of GP2, the Dallara GP2/11 was the car that helped shape a generation of future Formula 1 talent.

Introduced for the 2011 season, the GP2/11 paired Dallara's carbon-fiber chassis with a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V8 producing roughly 600 horsepower. With no power steering, massive downforce, slick tires, and a six-speed sequential gearbox, it demanded commitment from the driver and rewarded precision.

This example, spotted at COTA in a striking Alfa Romeo-inspired livery, is a reminder of an era when the path to Formula 1 was loud, visceral, and powered by a screaming V8. Few things look quite as purposeful as a proper open-wheel race car sitting in the paddock.

At El Mirage, speed has always been measured again

At El Mirage, speed has always been measured against the horizon. For generations, hot rodders have brought hand-built machines to this dry lake bed, chasing records beneath a sky that can turn theatrical without warning. I was going through some old photos and found this one from over a decade ago. Perhaps the coolest thing about El Mirage, there are no grandstands and very few distractions. Just a dry lake, open throttle, and the old American habit of finding out how fast something will go, even if it doesn't look road worthy.

This Meyers Manxter 2+2 was built to go much farth

This Meyers Manxter 2+2 was built to go much farther than the local cars and coffee.

Inspired by Bruce Meyers’ legendary Baja-conquering dune buggies, the Manxter combines the unmistakable shape of the original Meyers Manx with a longer, full-length Volkswagen chassis and room for four. Our build started with a 1970 VW pan and quickly became a ground-up project involving new floors, chassis repairs, a roll cage, side-impact protection, off-road suspension, Toyo tires, auxiliary lighting, expedition equipment, and more than a few late nights before its debut at the SEMA Show.

The goal was to drive the Manxter from Texas to Nicaragua as part of a Flag Expedition for The Explorers Club. Political unrest and regional security concerns changed those plans, and the expedition moved forward without the car. We still traveled into Nicaragua to map, photograph, and document ancient petroglyphs hidden along rivers, in caves, and deep in the jungle.

The mission continued. The Manxter simply had to stay behind.

We have not given up on taking it south. We hope to bring the car to Central America in the near future and continue the journey it was built to make. Until then, you can see the Expedition Manxter in person at this year’s Wheels | Watches | Whiskey at The Stella Hotel and Lake Walk in Bryan, Texas.

It may be clean when it arrives. We make no promises about how long it will stay that way.

Parked outside the company’s longtime home on East

Parked outside the company’s longtime home on East 11th Street in Tulsa, the blue-and-cream truck has become a roadside landmark along Route 66. Its rounded nose and cab-forward proportions came from a far smaller and more inventive American manufacturer, Fageol.

The Fageol story began with the Fageol brothers, who became known for building innovative trucks and buses. After leaving the original Fageol company, Frank and William Fageol formed Twin Coach in Kent, Ohio. In 1950, Twin Coach revived the family name for a new line of delivery and moving vans built with International Harvester chassis, engines, and running gear.

The design was promoted as something close to a trailer without a tractor. Instead of placing a separate cab ahead of the cargo box, Fageol wrapped the truck in one long, streamlined body. The unusual construction created a nearly flat floor, more interior cargo space, and easier movement between the driver’s compartment and the back of the van.

Page Moving & Storage purchased this truck new in 1954, making the company its original owner. Powered by a six-cylinder International engine, the Fageol reportedly handled moves around Tulsa and made long-distance trips from coast to coast. In its working days, it carried furniture, trunks, household goods, and likely more than a few pianos for Oklahoma families starting new chapters elsewhere.

Page itself has been part of Tulsa since 1910, predating Route 66 by 16 years. When the Mother Road was realigned along 11th Street, the company found itself operating directly on one of America’s most important transportation corridors.

Today, the Fageol no longer spends its days hauling households across the country, but I think it would make a really cool race-car hauler for a classic '50s sports car.

The white number 98 Cobra has Hollywood history, Shelby family provenance, and timeless good looks that still turns heads anywhere it goes.

Owned by the Shelby family, this Cobra is one of the cars built for Ford v Ferrari, where it helped carry the Willow Springs race sequence that introduces Ken Miles (Christian Bale) as a driver who could make a Cobra dance while making race officials sweat.

In the film, the Willow Springs scene does more than give us tire smoke and noise. It sets the tone for who Miles was: a mechanic, racer, and perfectionist who cared more about laptimes than the politics. Before the GT40 took the fight to Ferrari at Le Mans, it was the Cobra that helped define the Shelby legend.

Oklahoma’s stretch of Route 66 delivers all three. For the Mother Road’s 100th anniversary, I partnered with the Oklahoma Route 66 Centennial Commission to share my El Reno to Tulsa itinerary, including classic diners, motorcycle history, giant fiberglass icons, the Blue Whale, the Mayo Hotel, and plenty of open road.
