Before Formula Super Vee became a proving ground for future IndyCar stars, before the wings, slicks, pro-series budgets, and factory-backed ladder systems, there was a much simpler idea:

Take the spirit of Formula Vee and make it faster.

That idea helped give birth to the Beach SV1600.

Built by Gene Beach and Competition Components in Clearwater, Florida, the Beach SV1600 was one of the earliest cars developed for the new Formula Super Vee class. Volkswagen of America wanted a faster, more advanced step beyond Formula Vee, and Beach was already one of the men who understood how to turn humble Volkswagen parts into proper racing machinery.

The result was a lightweight, tube-frame, fiberglass-bodied formula car powered by an air-cooled Volkswagen-based 1600cc engine. Simple by modern standards, but serious for its day.

The Beach SV1600 helped define the early Formula Super Vee era, a brief and fascinating period when small constructors could still shape the future of motorsport from modest shops. Gene Beach’s cars had already proven themselves in Formula Vee, including international success in the 1960s, and his Super Vee prototype helped Volkswagen introduce a new class that would grow into one of the most important open-wheel stepping stones of the 1970s and 1980s.

Today, the Beach SV1600 is rare. Only a handful are believed to have been built, and surviving examples often carry the scars, updates (like this one's body work), and stories that come from decades of racing, restoration, and reinvention.

These cars were never meant to sit still. They were tools built for drivers, tracks, trailers, late nights, borrowed parts, and early mornings in the paddock. They belong to an era when racing still felt handmade.

The Beach SV1600 may not have the name recognition of a March, Ralt, Lola, or Chevron, but its place in history is different. It was there at the beginning. It helped turn Formula Super Vee from an idea into a real race car.

For the Centennial Celebration of the Mother Road, I partnered with the Oklahoma Route 66 Centennial Commission to explore a classic Oklahoma stretch from El Reno to Tulsa. Along the way, two stops really stood out: Seaba Station Motorcycle Museum, packed with vintage bikes and roadside history, and the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum, where classic cars tell the story of America’s love affair with the open road.

From two wheels to four, Oklahoma’s Route 66 is still built for people who believe the journey matters.

Housed in a 1921 filling station in Warwick, Oklah

Housed in a 1921 filling station in Warwick, Oklahoma, this old brick building has lived a few lives: roadside service station, machine shop, antique store, and now one of the most authentic motorcycle museums on the Mother Road.

Inside, you’ll find vintage bikes, racing machines, old signs, Route 66 memorabilia, and the kind of mechanical history that makes you slow down and stay awhile.

Sadly, the museum is expected to close in early 2027 as the owner retires, with much of the collection and the building set to be sold. So if you are planning a Route 66 trip, this is one stop you need to make while you still can.
