Full review of the 2026 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail covering specs, hybrid performance, towing, interior luxury, pricing, and how it compares to the GX and rivals.

Last year, Lexus introduced an option to their flagship LX that surprised almost nobody: a hybrid powertrain. Lexus is known for its hybrid powertrains throughout its lineup, in various forms, from the UX to the now-retired LS. Blessed with the highest numerical name for a Lexus, the LX700h comes in four different variants. Now that Toyota no longer offers the larger 300-Series Land Cruiser and has the 250-Series Land Cruiser, the LX is the closest you can get to the top-of-the-line Land Cruiser in other markets. Starting with the most off-road-focused version, called 700h Overtrail, the LX includes F-Sport Handling, Luxury, and Ultra Luxury trims. As the ultimate versions of the LX, prices have increased, with the Overtrail starting at $ 116,000 and the Ultra Luxury trim topping $140,000. This week, we tested the LX 700h Overtrail with an upgraded Mark Levinson sound system and a third-row delete. Is the LX still the ultimate off-road Lexus, and is it that much better than the significantly cheaper GX?

Lexus LX 700h Overtrail: Pushing Hard Into Premium Off-Road

Similar to other off-road-focused SUVs, the Lexus LX 700h Overtrail trades shiny chrome for black chrome or matte gray accents. The front is dominated by an oversized grille, LED headlights, and an aluminum skid plate. This LX 700h came in Nori Green paint, which matched well with the 18-inch matte gray wheels with 33-inch tires, matte gray wheel arches, black handles, and black mirrors. Cameras and sensors are mounted throughout to provide a 360-degree view. Although the LX is a premium vehicle, it still retains a small sunroof. The rear is dominated by oversized, blade-shaped taillights with an integrated light bar, along with “Lexus” spelled out and LX 700h badging. Unlike Lexus of old, the only way to tell this is a hybrid is by that badge. The tailgate is power-operated with a kick sensor, and the 5-seater LX offers ample space. 7-seat variants lose out on space, but the seats fold down easily. It’s a substantial SUV, but the interior showcases how even a four-year-old design can look dated.

Inside the Leuxs LX 700h Overtrail

Being a top-of-the-line Lexus, the material quality is high. Black semi-aniline leather and Black Open-Pore Wood trim gave the LX 700h Overtrail a dark interior, but a Stone-Brown interior is available. Heated, cooled, and massaging front-row seats are comfortable with plenty of adjustability. In front of the driver is a multifunction, powered, and heated steering wheel with paddle-shifters and controls for media and safety controls. Oddly, the button for the 360-degree camera is to the left of the steering wheel. A 12.3-inch instrument cluster has a good amount of information alongside a head-up display. Next to the driver is a 12.3-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It works well enough, but the screen looks to be plopped on top of a secondary screen for climate control and other features, and looks too small in a vehicle of this size.

Climate controls combine a touchscreen with physical buttons and switches. The GX does a better job of integrating both. Below are buttons and knobs to control the various on-road and off-road drive modes. First, there is the MTS (Multi-Terrain Select) button with off-road modes such as Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, and Deep Snow. Next to that are the on-road drive modes, including Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport S, Sport S+, and Custom. Finally, a DAC/Crawl button assists with going up or down hill on rough terrain. The LX can also transform the four-wheel-drive system between low and high. Both the front and rear locking differentials are electronic and can be adjusted. As a hybrid, the LX700h retains the same shifter seen in other hybrid Lexus vehicles, and physical buttons for the heated and ventilated seats are in this area. Air suspension is included, and buttons can adjust from easy-entry and exiting to normal and two higher settings for off-roading. A wireless charger is standard, as is a Cool Box in the center console. Lexus also included a digital rearview camera.

Second row seats are heated and ventilated with comfortable seats, along with retractable shades. There is a good amount of leg and head space, but for a vehicle this large, there is a bit to be desired. Climate control functions for the second row are behind the center console. Although a third row is standard, a third-row delete reduces the price by $1,750. This row is quite small and useful only for kids or shorter journeys. The only other option for the 700h Overtrail is the $2,660 Mark Levinson 25-speaker sound system, which is just as good as in other Lexus products.

Lexus LX 700h Overtrail: Power and Performance

Under the hood is the same 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 as in the LX 600, but with an electric motor. Combined, these produce 457 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic and full-time 4WD also come from the LX 600. All of this propels the LX 700h Overtrail from 0-60 MPH in around 5.5 seconds. That’s a gain of around 0.5 seconds compared to the LX 600. Power delivery is strong, especially in Sport S and Sport S+. That said, I found Comfort to be a great blend of power and, obviously, comfort. The transition from hybrid and gas engine feels more conventional thanks to the 10-speed automatic. As a large SUV, the LX doesn’t handle that well, which is fine since the LX is made more for comfort than sport, which also negates the rationale for the F-Sport Handling. Fuel economy is better than the LX 600, but not by much, at around 18-20 MPG. For those who enjoy towing, the LX 700h with its standard Towing Package can tow up to 8,000 pounds.

Safety comes from Lexus Safety Sense 3.0+, which includes blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, cross-traffic alert, and pre-collision warning. These work as well as they do in other Lexus products with a good amount of alerts. Pricing for the LX 700h starts at $115,000 for the Overtrail. The addition of the Mark Levinson sound system and subtraction of the third row brought the total for this to around $118,000. That is quite high, especially when competitors from Infiniti and Cadillac come in at under $100,000. Even the GX at its highest trim is under $85,000. It might not be able to tow as much as the LX, but it has almost all the features for significantly less.

  1. I was thinking about the TX but my dealer didn’t have this Overtrail on the lot. Need to see one in person.
