Toyota looks to its past with the Carolla FX

Celebrating vehicles from the past isn’t a new thing. Manufacturers will reintroduce styling packages, paint, badges, and more to evoke nostalgia. Even manufacturers like Toyota will equip some of their vehicles with Heritage badging. As a look to the past, the 2025 Toyota Corolla sedan received the FX treatment, which was confusing since the 1987 Corolla FX16 was a zippy hatchback. Trying to right their wrongs, the 2026 Toyota Corolla hatchback receives retro styling inspired by late-80s hatchbacks. While the styling cues have helped to make the Corolla look more exciting, Toyota didn’t modify the Corolla FX where it matters: in the powertrain or suspension. That means it retains the same naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four and CVT. Only 1,600 FX hatchbacks will be built, but is it worth it over the Corolla SE it’s based on?

Corolla FX: 80s Vibes

Looks-wise, Toyota made some great decisions to harken back to the 1987 model. Three colors are available, including Ice Cap white, Blue Crush Metallic, and this car’s Inferno orange paint. 18-inch gloss white alloy wheels and an integrated spoiler are fun throwbacks. Oddly, this car isn’t badged as a Corolla FX. Instead, Corolla is written out with 80’s style font along with Special Edition. Otherwise, the FX retains the rest of the Corolla’s styling. A slightly large grille is flanked by LED headlights. The side proportions retain the Corolla hatchback’s sporty styling, while the rear has a small rear window and LED taillights. Design-wise, Toyota did a good job transforming the SE into the FX, but it is confusing why the car isn’t badged as an FX.

Corolla FX: Modern Interior

Inside, the Corolla FX is nearly identical to an SE. The biggest change is the Sports Touring seats with orange stitching. Both are heated. The driver gets 10-way adjustability while the passenger gets four-way adjustability. Material quality is fine for a sub-$30,000 vehicle. In front of the driver is your standard Toyota steering wheel with paddle-mounted shifters and buttons to adjust the digital driver’s display, media controls, and adaptive cruise control. That digital driver’s display is crisp, has a good amount of customability including different tachometer displays, and is where you can adjust the safety systems. Next to the driver is an eight-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Although a larger unit is available on the Corolla sedan, the hatchback uses the smaller unit. It works fine, but competitors have larger screens. Single-zone climate control comes with the FX and is simple-to-use thanks to buttons and knobs.

A Qi-wireless charger is flanked by the heated-seat buttons for the front passengers. The driver modes, activated with a switch, include Eco, Normal, and Sport. Additional buttons near the shifter are for the auto-hold and parking brake. Rear passengers don’t have as much space as in the competition, but there are cupholders in the doors. Six speakers are standard, and the sound is a little tinny. Other than the sports seats and some orange stitching throughout the cabin, the changes are quite subtle. The interior is getting quite dated and is in need of an update.

Corolla FX: Power and Performance

Powering the front-wheel-drive 2026 Corolla FX is a 2.0-liter engine with 169-horsepower and 151 pound-feet-of-torque. A Dynamic-Shift CVT with simulated gears comes standard. Acceleration is a rather leisurely 8.5 seconds to 60 MPH. Since there are no mechanical upgrades for the FX, it drives the same as the SE. Driving dynamics are fine, and the CVT does a good enough job of simulating gearshifts, especially in Manual mode and with the paddle-shifters. Fuel economy is the same as the SE at around 30 MPG. Safety systems include blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, back-up camera, and lane-keep assist.

Pricing for the 1,600-unit limited-edition 2026 Toyota Corolla FX is around $28,000. Although the exterior styling for the Corolla FX looks great, this seems to be a missed opportunity for the aging Corolla. Toyota doesn’t have a competitor for the Honda Civic Si, and the FX could have been it. Pricing would be more than $30,000, but the FX could have had upgraded suspension, a real automatic, and engine upgrades. As it is, the Corolla just doesn’t have the technology or design of competitors from Honda, Hyundai, or Kia. Hopefully, the next generation comes soon with the updates the Corolla needs to be fully competitive again.

  1. I had an FX16 back in the 80s loved that little car. The new one looks good, but just doesn’t seem as focused as the original.
