Liberal Democrats pushing to ban fossil fuel autos by 2040

The UK Liberal Democrat party has unveiled a plan that would only allow ultra-low carbon vehicles on UK roads by 2040. The plan would ban the millions of petrol and diesel cars currently on UK roads from being driven. Only electric vehicles and ultra-efficient hybrid cars would be allowed on UK highways, the only exception would be for freight vehicles, the plan will be voted on at the upcoming Liberal Democrat conference in Glasgow and if ratified would become party policy. The party is also considering the implementation of a system of road taxes in congested areas, similar to London’s congestion charge, but across the whole of Britain. These plans are part of a sweeping plan to create the “zero-carbon” Britain that also includes a number of restrictions on air travel, rail, and other forms of transportation.
