After a three‑year break, the Jeep Cherokee returns, bigger, boxier, and decisively modern. Its revival claims to lean heavily on heritage and nostalgia, with upright lines, a chunky silhouette, and a design language they claim is lifted straight out of Jeep’s archives. According to Jeep, this is the iconic XJ in modern form, all unveiled at a splashy launch event in New York, complete with LL COOL J. While it does feature boxy sheet metal, a familiar seven‑slot grille, and what has been called “Jerry‑Can” taillights, while we haven’t seen it in person yet, it doesn’t seem to really capture the rugged spirit of the XJ.
Beneath that retro-modern exterior sits a fresh STLA Large platform, which will be shared with future Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, and Maserati vehicles. The wheelbase has been stretched to 113 inches (up from 106.6), and the overall length has increased five inches. Cargo capacity has also grown by about 30 percent; now you get roughly 68 cubic feet with seats down.

Under the Hood of the 2026 Jeep Cherokee
Gone are the purely six-cylinder gas-powered days. Every 2026 Jeep Cherokee comes with a turbocharged 1.6‑liter inline‑4 engine, twin electric motors, a modest battery, and an e‑CVT for all‑wheel drive. Output lands at 210 hp and 230 lb‑ft, which is about 60 horsepower down from the previous generation’s optional engine. This “retro” reimagining of the XJ doesn’t include the 4X4 capability, so you will need to keep this jeep on the pavement or fire roads. Launching the 2026 Jeep Chrokee in New York City screams that no real off-road adventures need apply.
Jeep claims a combined 37 mpg, nearly double the outgoing models, and more than 500 miles per tank. Impressive on paper, but not quite class-leading, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid edges it in efficiency. Still, with a 3,500‑pound towing capacity, the Cherokee flexes muscle most compact hybrids lack.

Interior & Tech: A Touch of Wagoneer at Wrangler Price
Slide inside, and the Cherokee trades old awkwardness for widescreen drama. A 12.3‑inch center display, 10.3‑inch digital cluster, octagonal steering wheel, Jeep looks like it borrowed the cabin from its pricier all-electric Wagoneer S. Materials look modern and thoughtful, with sustainable touches and clever storage solutions lighting the way.
We haven’t had a chance to get in and test drive it, but the interior looks like a nice place to be. While it is nice, it feels more like a Jeep Liberty replacement than the Jeep Cherokee that we all know and love.

Not Everyone’s Onboard
Jeep revived the Cherokee with a blowout in New York City, featuring celebrities, influencers, and a “camp” that featured the Cherokee’s most iconic models over the years, but some veterans of the brand’s XJ lineage aren’t convinced. On social media, sentiment is mixed:
“It looks great but Jeep lost me when the XJ disappeared (now that’s what I conjure when I think Cherokee); yes, I’m a ‘boomer’ and miss the old days, but this new Cherokee isn’t making it into my garage.” @chuckgrenci6404
Over on Jeep forum, one commenter said: “To me that is the kinda styling in the front screams GMC to me not jeep to me.”
On powertrain choices, skepticism simmers: hybrid purists and off‑road traditionalists grumble that a modest hybrid system lacks the grunt or feel of a solid gas engine:
One Reddit commenter said, “Most hybrid implementations suck when they don’t use a sufficiently large ICE. The 4‑cyl is just not enough for this vehicle’s mass.”

But will LL COOL J be enough to launch the all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee to the mid-40s millennials that Jeep needs to reach? We will have to see. Jeep is going to have to overcome abandoning this segment for three years, while buyers have more choices than ever. The new Cherokee must go up against the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Bronco Sport, and many others, and that is a tall order considering just how crowded this segment is.
2026 Jeep Cherokee Specs at a Glance
- Powertrain Turbo-4 + twin electric motors; ~210 hp, 230 lb-ft, AWD standard
- Fuel Economy Estimated 37 mpg combined, ~500-mile range
- Towing ~3,500 lb, matching RAV4 Hybrid and tripling CR-V Hybrid
- Dimensions 188.1″ length, 113″ wheelbase, roomier and bolder
- Cargo: Around 68 cu ft with rear seats folded
The 2026 Cherokee is a calculated reboot, while they are attempting to sell classic off-road charm wrapped in modern efficiency and connectivity. It’s boxier, techier, and greener, built for a new audience. The XJ Inspiration is a stretch, and those of us who grew up in the back seat of a Jeep Cherokee on summer road trips and Boy Scout campouts aren’t going to see the styling connection.
Yet the risk is real. Those of us who remember the Cherokee by its angular simplicity and visceral engine notes feel let down by the softening of its character. Jeep’s gamble? That marketing heritage plus hybrid is a deal rugged enough to seal the future. But for some, the question remains: Does it feel like a Cherokee? Time and buyer feedback will tell.
Below is what we dreamed up an XJ-inspired Cherokee we would buy should look like:

The Jeep Cherokee is perfect for this moment, sorry it isn’t a toxic-man-mobile for you. But you couldn’t buy one anyways.
They should have just hired you to design it
They tried but it still has low ground clearance, it looks like a lift kit won’t be an option here, and the low hanging front bumper will be ripped off at the edge of a boulder or big puddle. I’m still daily driving a 1996 Cherokee XJ with just over 392,000 miles on the original 4.0L. This modern rendition is better than the last one but still missed the mark in my opinion.
Jeep has lost its way since it was taken over by the Italians
Your version looks way better
It has been amazing watching Jeep getting blasted online about this Cherokee, they have built a vehicle that appeals to no one and will be sold based on people’s credit score not qualifying them for the vehicle they really want.
Great take on this lackluster car, it seems all the mom bloggers they flew out to NYC of course love it (Shocker), but this isn’t going to move the needle for the Jeep brand in a positive way.
F*ckin¦ amazing redesign you did, Jeep has lost the plot and if they think that Jeep buyers are going to flock to this reskinned Fiat they are nuts.
Why do automotive brands launch in NYC a place that makes owning a car a nightmare, with “influencers” who don’t live the Jeep lifestyle in any form, and then they roll out a lame rebadged Fiat and wonder why they are losing market share.
