Volvo EX40: Stunning Interior Design and Comfort
Volvo’s reputation for crafting luxurious interiors is evident in the EX40. The cabin boasts high-quality materials, a minimalist design, and thoughtful ergonomics. The seats are upholstered in premium materials, providing exceptional comfort for short and long commutes. The spacious layout ensures ample legroom and headroom, accommodating all passengers. We had five adults in the EX40 for a trip to dinner, and it was more than comfortable. For around town, it is great.
Central to the EX40’s interior is the Google-based infotainment system. The 9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen integrates Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store, offering a seamless and intuitive user experience. Voice commands allow drivers to control various functions without distraction, enhancing safety and convenience.
Cargo Space: Compact Yet Versatile
The 2025 Volvo EX40 may be a compact SUV, but it makes the most of its available space with an innovative and practical cargo area. Behind the rear seats, the Volvo EX40 offers 16 cubic feet of cargo space, on par with many small luxury SUVs. Fold the rear seats down, and the capacity expands to 57.5 cubic feet, providing ample room for luggage, groceries, or even small furniture items.
One of the EX40’s standout features is its flat load floor, which makes loading and unloading cargo a breeze. Volvo has also included thoughtful touches like underfloor storage, perfect for keeping valuables out of sight, and a front trunk (frunk) that adds an extra 1.1 cubic feet of storage—ideal for storing charging cables or small items.
While it may not have the cavernous cargo capacity of larger SUVs, the EX40’s well-designed layout ensures that every inch of space is maximized. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend getaway or just running errands, the EX40’s cargo space is more than sufficient for most daily needs.
Impressive Driving Dynamics
The Volvo EX40 delivers a refined and engaging driving experience. The electric powertrain provides instant torque, resulting in brisk acceleration. The suspension is tuned for a balance between comfort and agility, ensuring a smooth ride over various road conditions. The low center of gravity, attributed to the battery placement, enhances stability and handling. The regenerative braking means that you are driving with just the throttle pedal, once you get used to it, you’ll be modulating the throttle and hardly need to step on the brake.
One unique aspect of the Volvo EX40 is the absence of a traditional start/stop button. The vehicle automatically powers on when the driver sits and powers off upon exit. While this feature streamlines the driving experience, it may require an adjustment period for those accustomed to conventional ignition systems.
Volvo EX40: Disappointing Backup Camera Quality
Despite its many strengths, the EX40’s backup camera falls short of expectations. While the camera’s resolution is ok, the positioning is subpar, leading to a view that obscures most of what you need to see, like oncoming traffic or pedestrians that are further away but still behind you. This issue is shocking given Volvo’s emphasis on safety and technology. The lack of visibility can hinder backing out of parking spots as the field of view is so limited by the camera’s placement.
Should you buy a Volvo EX40?
The 2025 Volvo EX40 excels in interior luxury, driving performance, and technological integration, embodying the brand’s commitment to quality and innovation. However, the substandard backup camera is a notable drawback that potential buyers should consider. Addressing this issue would further solidify the EX40’s position as a leading choice in the electric SUV market.
