The 2025 GMC Hummer EV 3X Pickup is a bold choice for those looking for an electric vehicle (EV), reviving the iconic Hummer brand with a modern, “eco-friendly” twist. Priced at $130,400, including destination and delivery charges, our test vehicle came with notable features such as the optional Infinity Roof, premium audio system, Deep Aurora Metallic paint (UPS Truck Brown), and a dual-level charge cord. While the Hummer EV 3X impresses me with its performance and comfort, I haven’t changed my mind since I first tested the Hummer EV back in 2022. Its imposing size, charging duration, weight, and limited towing range mean it isn’t a practical choice for anyone; the Hummer EV 3X is a six-figure toy.

Hummer EV 3X Performance and Driving Experience

The Hummer EV 3X is powered by a tri-motor setup, delivering a staggering 1,000 horsepower and accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.0 seconds. This rapid acceleration is facilitated by the “Watts to Freedom” (WTF) mode, which unleashes the vehicle’s full power for a thrilling driving experience. Just like in a muscle car, as the speedometer goes up, the range indicates goes down when you are playing in WTF Mode.

Despite its hot rod features, the Hummer EV offers a comfortable and smooth ride. The adaptive air suspension system effectively absorbs road imperfections, providing a plush driving experience. Additionally, the four-wheel steering system, which includes the unique “CrabWalk” feature, enhances maneuverability by allowing the vehicle to move diagonally at low speeds, which is required if you try to park this beast in a standard-sized parking space in our city’s downtown.

Hummer EV 3X Design and Features

The Hummer EV’s design pays homage to its rugged heritage while incorporating modern aesthetics. The optional Deep Aurora Metallic with black accents paint adds a sophisticated touch to its bold and aggressive stance. The Infinity Roof, featuring removable transparent Sky Panels, offers an open-air experience, connecting occupants with the environment.

Inside, the Hummer EV combines luxury with functionality. The cabin comfortably seats five passengers, but getting in and with the roof panels on requires a bit of contortion as you step up and duck under the low roof line. The interior is replete with high-quality materials and a modern design to create an inviting atmosphere. The Kicker audio system delivers premium sound quality, enhancing the driving experience.

Practicality and Usability

The Hummer EV’s imposing dimensions—216.8 inches in length, 86.7 inches in width, and 79.1 inches in height—make navigating through narrow urban streets and finding suitable parking spaces challenging. This is especially noticeable when looking for charging stations since most cities have EV parking limited to compact spots. Its substantial size may limit its practicality for daily commuting, especially in congested areas.

Equipped with the tri-motor setup, the Hummer EV 3X has a maximum towing capacity of 8,500 pounds. However, towing significantly impacts the vehicle’s electric range. While the standard driving range is approximately 314 miles, this range can decrease substantially when hauling heavy loads, necessitating more frequent charging stops on long trips. The lack of “pull through” charging stations makes towing less of an option for many drivers.

Charging the Hummer EV requires careful planning. Using a 240-volt Level 2 home charger, a full charge takes about 10.5 hours. While DC fast-charging capability allows for quicker charging sessions, the availability of fast-charging stations may be limited in certain areas, potentially causing inconvenience during long-distance travel. We found out that the cold front that brought snow to Texas affected the battery range, losing as much as 5% overnight parked in the driveway.

The Hummer EV comes equipped with a suite of advanced safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Additionally, GMC’s Super Cruise technology enables hands-free driving on compatible highways, enhancing driver convenience on long journeys.

Overall, I still don’t understand who the GMC Hummer EV 3X Pickup is really for, its doesn’t do traditional EV car stuff well, it’s so large and heavy that off-roading would be a liability, towing and hauling reduce the range dramatically, and while it is super fast, it isn’t really what you would call sporty when it comes to handling. For individuals prioritizing performance and comfort over everyday practicality, the Hummer EV offers a compelling package.
