Nissan’s Formula E team electrified the track in Round 2 of the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, celebrating their first GEN3 Evo victory. Oliver Rowland delivered a masterclass in strategy and skill, clinching the win with a series of breathtaking late overtakes.
Rowland’s day began with a strong performance in qualifying, reaching the semi-finals of the duels and earning a fourth-place start on the grid. In contrast, his teammate, Norman Nato, faced challenges during qualifying, placing him 18th at the start of the race.
From the moment the lights went out, Rowland showed intent, muscling his way into the top three by the second lap and executing a brilliant last-corner overtake to climb another spot. As the race unfolded, he played a patient game, conserving his Attack Mode boost until the critical moment. Following a late Safety Car restart, Rowland unleashed his remaining energy reserves, rocketing from fourth to first in under a minute and sealing a dramatic victory.
“It’s an amazing result for the team and to achieve this victory in Mexico, which is such an important market for Nissan, and in front of these brilliant fans is very special. Oli’s performance was excellent, with strong pace and brilliant overtakes in the very last laps of the race. Norman had great speed as well, but we made a mistake in qualifying which compromised his starting place and he couldn’t do much despite a solid drive throughout the whole race. Overall, it’s been an incredible day and the performance this weekend gives us lots of confidence heading into the rest of the season.” Tommaso Volpe, managing director and team principal, Nissan Formula E Team.
On the other side of the garage, Nato fought valiantly in a closely matched midfield. Despite the challenges, his clean, steady performance saw him climb five positions to finish 13th.
This landmark result for Nissan catapults them into second place in the Manufacturers’ Standings, with Rowland also claiming the runner-up spot in the Drivers’ Championship. As the team gears up for the first double-header of the season in Jeddah next month, they’ll be looking to carry this momentum into February 13-15 for what promises to be another thrilling chapter in this electrified championship.
Stay tuned for more as the action unfolds, and Nissan continues to chase glory on the global stage.
