The 2025 BMW X2 xDrive28i is an evolution of BMW's compact SUV lineup, adding the brand's signature sporty driving dynamics to the often mundane small SUV category. Compared to the previous generation, the 2025 model offers a more refined driving experience, enhanced interior comfort, and bold styling cues inside and out.

The new X2 makes a statement with its coupe-SUV design, featuring a sleeker silhouette and more aggressive styling. The front end is dominated by a large signature kidney grille, now available with an illuminated option, flanked by sharp LED headlights. The overall design emphasizes athleticism, with a low, wide stance that sets it apart from more traditional SUVs in this segment.

The 19-inch alloy wheels balance performance and comfort, while the extended wheelbase compared to the previous model provides better stability, especially at higher speeds. The X2’s new proportions enhance its presence on the road, making it a standout even among other premium crossovers.

Under the hood, the 2025 X2 xDrive28i houses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that produces 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which delivers quick and smooth shifts, although there is a slight delay in response when using the paddle shifters. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system ensures that power is effectively distributed, providing confidence in various driving conditions.

The X2 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.2 seconds, a respectable time for its class, though it’s not the fastest in its segment. The engine is lively, with plenty of low-end torque, making it feel quick off the line and responsive when merging or overtaking. The exhaust note is enhanced via the audio system, offering a sportier sound that complements its performance-oriented character.

BMW’s tuning of the X2’s chassis delivers a sporty yet comfortable ride. The adaptive suspension system, which is part of the optional Dynamic Handling Package, adjusts to different driving modes, offering a firmer setup for spirited driving and a softer one for daily commutes. Even in its sportiest setting, the ride is not punishing, making it suitable for those who appreciate a blend of comfort and performance.

The steering, typical of modern BMWs, is precise but lacks the feedback purists might desire. It’s light and easy to manage in urban settings, though it feels somewhat disconnected during aggressive cornering. However, the X2 stays impressively flat in corners, with minimal body roll, ensuring it remains composed even during more dynamic driving.

Step inside, and the X2’s cabin impresses with its modern design and high-quality materials. The twin-screen setup dominates the dashboard, featuring BMW’s latest iDrive 9.0 system. This infotainment platform is fast and visually appealing but still suffers from some usability quirks, such as deep menu dives for certain functions. Fortunately, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless and standard, making smartphone integration seamless.

The seats are well-bolstered, providing excellent support without being overly aggressive. The use of faux leather upholstery in the standard trim is convincing enough that many might not miss the real thing. Rear seat space, while improved over the previous model, is still a bit tight, especially when compared to the more spacious X1, but it's adequate for shorter trips. My favorite design detail is the interior dor handles which jut out from the door and look like they were pulled from a future spacecraft.

For 2025, the X2 continues to prioritize style and sportiness over outright practicality. Cargo space is decent for the class, but the sloping roofline limits the utility that some might expect from a small SUV. However, BMW has made strides in improving overall cabin storage, with clever solutions like a wireless charging pad that secures your phone with a roller-coaster-style latch.

Starting at around $42,450, the X2 xDrive28i offers a premium experience with a wide array of standard features. Optional packages, such as the Premium Package, add luxuries like a panoramic sunroof, heated seats, and a head-up display, pushing the price closer to $50,000. While it’s on the pricier side of the segment, the X2’s combination of performance, design, and technology justifies the premium for those seeking a distinctive and enjoyable driving experience.

The 2025 BMW X2 xDrive28i is a compelling choice for buyers who want a luxury compact SUV with a strong emphasis on style and driving enjoyment. While it may not offer the practicality of some competitors, it more than makes up for it with its engaging dynamics, premium interior, and head-turning design. For those who prioritize an athletic character in their daily driver, the X2 is a strong contender in a crowded segment
