Growing up in the ’90s, the Integra Type R was a car many of us dreamed of owning, I remember when one of the rich kids we knew in town rolled up to the garage in a 1997 Type R, and while we were swapping a B18 into a Civic hatchback, everyone had to stop and look at it.

This was back in the day when a Type R or BMW M badge was rare and special. Back then, it was a lot more than a trim package. The Type R had 25 more horsepower and was nearly 100 pounds lighter than the standard Integra. Acura is trying to channel this spirit in the new Integra Type S, and after a week of driving it, I have to say they have hit the mark!

Under the hood, the Integra Type S is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, delivering an impressive 320 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, which features rev-matching technology, ensuring smooth downshifts and turning everyone into a toe/heel hero without any fancy footwork.

On the road, the Integra Type S delivers a dynamic driving experience. Its adaptive damper system offers Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes. While the Comfort mode provides a more compliant ride for daily driving, Sport and Sport+ modes significantly stiffen the suspension, enhancing the car’s responsiveness and handling. The car’s 19-inch wheels, wider track, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires provide exceptional grip, making it a joy to drive on twisty roads and through corners.

The Integra Type S also features a limited-slip differential, which helps mitigate understeer and maintain traction during aggressive driving. The steering is direct and communicative, offering a satisfying and confidence-inspiring connection to the road. Brembo front brakes provide strong stopping power, adding to the overall performance package.

Inside, the Integra Type S offers a driver-focused cockpit with high-quality materials and thoughtful design elements. The seats shared with the Integra A-Spec but featuring firmer bolsters provide excellent lateral support during spirited driving. These seats are also heated and power-adjustable, adding to the car’s comfort and usability. The interior is adorned with black Ultrasuede inserts and simulated leather, which give it a premium feel.

One of the standout features of the Integra Type S is its 16-speaker ELS Studio 3D sound system, which delivers exceptional audio quality. The car also includes a head-up display and a customizable digital gauge cluster, which enhance the driving experience by keeping essential information within the driver’s line of sight. Despite its performance focus, the Integra Type S maintains practicality with a spacious hatchback design and fold-down rear seats. We loaded up the entire front end of our SV16 Formula Car in the back with the seats folded down.

The exterior design of the Integra Type S is both aggressive and refined. Unique body panels, a vented aluminum hood, and a larger grille opening contribute to improved airflow and cooling. The car’s widebody fender flares and gloss-black rear diffuser add to its sporty aesthetic while also enhancing its aerodynamic performance.  Available in various colors, including the Apex Blue Pearl of our test car, the Integra Type S can be further personalized with optional accessories such as a carbon-fiber rear spoiler, copper-finish wheels, and carbon-fiber mirror caps.

Compared to its main competitors, such as the Volkswagen Golf R and the Audi S3, the Integra Type S stands out for its performance, practicality, and price combination. Priced at $51,995, it offers a compelling value proposition, especially considering its extensive list of standard features and high performance. The car’s refined driving experience and high-quality interior make it a more appealing daily driver than the hardcore Honda Civic Type R, which shares its platform and many mechanical components.

The 2024 Acura Integra Type S is a well-rounded performance hatchback that successfully bridges the gap between daily usability and thrilling driving dynamics. Its powerful engine, engaging manual transmission, and advanced suspension system make it a joy to drive, while its comfortable interior and practical design ensure it can easily handle everyday tasks. For enthusiasts looking for a car that offers both excitement and refinement, the Integra Type S is an excellent choice.
