The Nissan Frontier Pro-4X continues to make a bold statement with its rugged prowess and classic truck styling. Now I must admit I have a soft spot for the Frontier, my 20-year-old Frontier has been one of the best trucks I have ever owned and is still chugging along with just over 160,000 miles on the clock. I have had the chance to drive the Pro-4X several times since its debut both on and off-road, and while it might not be packed with the latest in technology it still offers a lot of truck for the money.
Bucking the trend of modern mid-size pickups, the Frontier embraces a more traditional truck aesthetic, setting it apart from competitors like the Ford Ranger. Available in both King Cab and Crew Cab configurations with a 5- or 6-foot box, the Frontier exclusively offers a 310-hp V6 engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The trim levels range from the utilitarian S base to the fully loaded Pro-X or Pro-4X models, each catering to a specific taste and need.
While it may not clinch the title for class-leading towing—reserved for the Tacoma—the Frontier compensates by delivering exceptional value for mid-size truck enthusiasts. The Pro-4X model, in particular, steals the show with its off-road-centric features, making it a strong contender for those who crave adventure beyond the pavement.
The SV Convenience Package is now standard in the SV Crew Cab long bed, adding heated seats and steering wheel, bed lighting, and a spray-in bed liner. Pro-X and Pro-4X models now boast wireless Apple CarPlay as standard, and the Pro Premium package adds a touch of flair with Lava Red contrast stitching.
Venturing off the beaten path with the Nissan Frontier Pro-4X is a breeze. Engaging 4WD is a straightforward affair – no need to fumble through complex touchscreens; just turn the dial and let the adventure begin. The Pro-4X is equipped with all-terrain tires, Bilstein dampers, skid plates, and an electronically locking rear differential, making it an off-road force to be reckoned with.
Although the truck's architecture shares roots with its predecessor, Nissan has reinforced suspension mounting points, improved body mounts, and fine-tuned bump stops. The suspension setup remains faithful to the last generation, featuring coils up front and leaf springs at the rear. However, updates to chassis tuning, anti-roll bars, and dampening result in a refined on-road ride while maintaining exceptional off-road capabilities.
The simplicity of the 4X4 system doesn't hinder its performance. In four-wheel-high, the Frontier tears down dirt roads, and in low, it conquers steep grades and obstacles with ease. The Pro-4X emerges as a top choice for off-road enthusiasts, delivering everything one could desire in a mid-size off-road pickup, all at a price point that undercuts competitors like the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.
The 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X once again proves its mettle, cementing its status as a worthy contender for mid-size truck of the year. If you're in the market for a new adventure-ready pickup, the Frontier should be on your list, and like my 2004 Froniter, you should be able to keep it for decades!
