I finally got to drive the 2023 Honda Civic Type-R, as a hot-hatch fan, there are few to choose from these days and the Type-R stands out as the epitome of fun, combining power and performance, while still being somewhat affordable.

The heart of the Civic Type-R is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, now boasting 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. With a redesigned turbocharger and improved exhaust system, the Type R delivers exhilarating acceleration, racing from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. The six-speed manual transmission, upgraded to handle the increased power, ensures a thrilling driving experience, making every gear change a symphony of performance.

Designed for those who crave the track, the Civic Type-R has undergone significant enhancements to handle the demands of high-performance driving. Wider 19-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, a dual-axis strut front suspension suppressing torque steer, and improved brake cooling all contribute to the Type R’s prowess on the track. With a remarkable 1.02 g’s on the skidpad, this Honda hot hatch delivers an adrenaline-pumping experience.

The Civic Type-R breaks the mold of traditional sports cars by offering an affordable yet high-performance package with five doors. With a starting price that competes favorably with rivals like the Volkswagen Golf R, and even approaching the entry-level Toyota Supra, the Type-R proves that you don’t have to compromise on speed for practicality. It’s the perfect blend of a sports car and a daily driver.

Inside the Civic Type-R, the driver is treated to a cockpit designed for maximum engagement. The minimalist interior, adorned with red accents and faux carbon-fiber trim, creates a racy atmosphere. Super comfy and supportive front seats, along with shift light indicators atop the digital cluster, add to the driver-centric experience. Despite its performance focus, the Civic Type-R retains the practicality of the normal Civic hatchback, making it a versatile choice.

The Civic Type-R not only excels in performance but also manages to maintain a commendable fuel efficiency. With an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, this hot hatch balances power and efficiency. Whether you’re tearing up the track or cruising on the highway, the Civic Type-R proves that you can have a thrilling ride without sacrificing fuel economy.
