When Janus Motorcycles delivered a Janus Halcyon to my garage last October, it was meant to be a static display for an event with Tudor Watches. One of just 17 special-edition models, the delivery driver politely implied it probably shouldn’t be ridden. But with my Formula Supervee prototype trapped behind it and our staff photographer already on-site, temptation won.

So I suited up in some period-correct gear, rolled the Halcyon out of the garage, and took a short ride just down the road. I’m glad I did—because until that moment, Janus was more of an idea than an experience.

For years, I’d admired the brand from afar. A boutique manufacturer building vintage-inspired bikes by hand in Goshen, Indiana? Yes, please. But with no local dealerships or test rides, and a headquarters 1,138 miles away, getting seat time on one had always seemed like a long shot. Having this machine in my garage was a rare treat.

Even if I couldn’t take it out to Texas’ legendary Twisted Sisters route, the short ride was enough to know: this motorcycle isn’t about top speed or spec sheet wars—it’s about connection, craftsmanship, and storytelling on two wheels.

More Than a Pretty Frame

Yes, the $15,000+ price tag for a 450cc motorcycle might seem steep at first glance. A Royal Enfield Classic 350 starts at just $4,599, and a Triumph Bonneville slips in under $12,000. But comparing the Halcyon to those bikes is missing the point. Each Janus is a hand-built, bespoke machine crafted by a small team of artisans in the Midwest. Using their online configurator, I spec’d one out at $17,220—because of course I did.

It’s an investment in individuality. And in an era where even legacy brands like Benelli are badge-engineered in overseas factories, Janus is proudly doing it the hard way—domestically, and with heart.

How The Janus Halcyon Rides

The Halcyon 450’s aesthetic borrows heavily from the 1920s and ’30s: squared-off tank, swept-back bars, upright ergonomics. It reminds me most of an early Indian Scout—not in outright performance, but in spirit. Thankfully, you won’t have to mess with manual spark advance or kick-start rituals. This bike blends vintage charm with modern reliability: electric start, a five-speed transmission, fuel injection, and Brembo disc brakes front and rear.

The engine—a 445cc single-cylinder unit designed in Italy by SWM and produced in China under strict quality standards—feels lively and responsive. The Halcyon weighs just 345 lbs, making it nimble and confidence-inspiring at any speed. With a claimed top speed of 90 mph, it’s more than capable of handling everything from urban backroads to 80 mph Texas highways.

What surprised me most wasn’t the performance—it was how complete the riding experience felt. The sound, the feel, the ergonomics—it all worked together to create a motorcycle that’s as fun to ride as it is to look at.

The Evolution of Janus

Janus began in 2011 with their small-displacement Halcyon 50, eventually stepping up to the 250cc Halcyon in 2015. That model brought a 70mph top speed and was followed by two additional 250cc models: the café-inspired Phoenix and the scrambler-style Gryffin. The Phoenix was discontinued after only 79 were built, making it a true collectible. The Gryffin 250 starts at $9,200, while the entry-level Halcyon 250 can be had for $8,800.

But if you want the full experience—freedom, style, capability—it’s the Janus Halcyon 450 that delivers on every front.

The Gentleman’s Verdict

While I didn’t get to take the Halcyon on a grand adventure or through the canyons like I did with the Cleveland Ace years ago, this ride left a lasting impression. It’s more than a motorcycle—it’s a story you ride.

Janus represents something rare in the modern motorcycle world: a deep commitment to American craftsmanship, timeless design, and mechanical purity. Sure, the price may give some pause. But with waitlists stretching six to eight months and demand only increasing, it’s clear there’s a growing market for machines like this.

At the time of writing, Janus had a few 250cc models still in stock, including some of the now-discontinued Phoenix models. But if you’re like me, dreaming of a modern machine that transports you to another time without the headaches of antique ownership, the Janus Halcyon 450 belongs in your garage.
