The Apache Canyon Trading Post, on Route 62/180 in Whites City, New Mexico has greeted guests as they entered the Carlsbad Caverns National Park for decades and is still providing roadside photos for travelers making their way across southern New Mexico. Up until 1999, the trading post was known for its “Rattle Snake Wishing Well” where visitors could toss coins into a pit of snakes. Today it is a purveyor of all things kitsch and the perfect place to pick up a random souvenir from your adventure in New Mexico.
These original photos are from a series by photographer John Margolies, called Roadside America.
