The destination city of Fredericksburg, Texas attracts over 1.5 million tourists every year to the small Hill Country town, many driving in for a few days from nearby Austin to sample one of Texas' best-known wine regions. While most of the wineries in town cater to bachelorette parties or romantic getaways, one winery is dedicated to all things automotive, The Wine Garage.
The Wine Garage is part wine tasting room and part automotive museum, founded by Gail & Jennie McCulloch, who also own Fat Ass Ranch & Winery just down the road, the tasting room opened in 2018 and has become a destination for automotive and wine enthusiasts. Visitors are treated by an authentic "Howard Huge" mechanic sign that has been fully restored, but instead of a muffle or wrench, a wine bottle is in his hand.
Inside the tasting room, a massive mural features some of the most iconic movie cars of all time, and classic gas station logos have been reworked to feature Wine Garage branding. The wine selections are made from Texas grapes and each is named after a different classic car. The collection includes Mustang Malbec, Heavy Chevy Montepulciano, Lil' Red Corvette Cabernet, Big Daddy's Caddy Orange Muscat - Roussanne Blend, each representing a car housed in the collection housed at the Wine Garage tasting room. The Wine Garage specializes in dry red and white wines and the staff is fun and engaging, this is much more casual than many wineries making it a fun place to hang out if you are a gearhead.
As you enjoy your Texas wines you can explore the car collection which features a wide variety of cars from a 1969 Shelby GT500 to a modern Dodge Demon as well as a selection of vintage signs and motorsports memorabilia. The cars do change from time to time depending on if the owner Gail has been to an auction lately.
The Wine Garage is also available to rent for special events and is an ideal destination for car clubs looking to enjoy some time in Hill Country. We stopped off as part of a longer road trip in the McLaren 720S, you can read about the full trip here.
