2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-X Review: A Midsize Pickup ith Big Capability

For 2022, Nissan expands the Frontier lineup with the Pro-X, a two-wheel-drive version of the award-winning Pro-4X. Visually, the Frontier Pro-X shares nearly everything with its off-road-focused sibling—minus the 4×4 drivetrain. If you’re looking for a well-equipped midsize pickup truck but don’t need four-wheel drive, the Pro-X is a compelling option.

Nissan Frontier Pro-X Price & Features

Starting at $34,770, our test truck came in Glacier White and was fully loaded with premium options:

  • 17″ Beadlock-style wheels
  • Sports Bar with Utili-Track system
  • Off-road style step rails
  • Bumper Step
  • All-season floor mats
  • Tow package
  • Technology Package

With destination fees included, the total came to $39,425—which places it within $1,000 of a comparably equipped Ford Ranger and nearly $3,000 less than a Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 2WD.

Most Powerful Midsize Truck in Its Class

Like all 2022 Nissan Frontier models, the Pro-X is powered by a 3.8L V6 engine producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful midsize truck on the market. The ride quality is better than the Pro-4X, offering a comfortable (for a truck) experience on the road.

To test its capability, we took the Pro-X through a variety of real-world truck tasks across Texas, from towing a project car to hauling bulky items to storage. It handled everything with ease, though the smaller truck bed does limit cargo capacity when fully loaded.

Towing & Utility: What Can the Frontier Pro-X Handle?

The 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-X Crew Cab is equipped with a Class IV hitch, allowing it to tow up to 6,570 lbs.—more than enough for our project car and tow dolly. The compact size of the Frontier made it far easier to maneuver than a full-size truck, and with a light load, it felt like towing nothing at all.

When it came to hauling gear, the Utili-Track system made securing cargo simple, and the Sports Bar added style while offering potential for accessory lighting—just like the Nissan concept trucks debuted at the Chicago Auto Show.

Interior & Tech: Simple, Comfortable, and Functional

Inside, the Pro-X mirrors the Pro-4X, featuring:

  • NissanConnect infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • 7” touchscreen display
  • Physical switches for essential controls

The driver gets a power-adjustable seat, and the heated seats work quickly to keep you comfortable. While it doesn’t offer groundbreaking features, the cabin is practical and user-friendly.

Is the Nissan Frontier Pro-X the Right Truck for You?

If off-roading isn’t a priority, the Pro-X offers Nissan’s best equipment and aggressive styling without the added cost of 4×4 capability. With a smoother ride and better fuel efficiency than the Pro-4X, it’s the ideal midsize pickup for daily driving, Home Depot runs, and weekend adventures.

Should You Buy the 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-X?

The 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-X is an excellent choice for buyers who want rugged styling, strong performance, and modern tech without the added expense of four-wheel drive. If your driving is mostly on-road with occasional hauling and towing, the Pro-X offers the best balance of capability and value in the midsize truck segment.

Who is the Pro-X for?

  • Urban & suburban truck owners who need a reliable pickup for everyday use, home improvement projects, and weekend trips.
  • Buyers who want a powerful midsize truck with a best-in-class V6 engine but don’t require 4×4.
  • Towing enthusiasts who need a truck that can pull a small camper, boat, or trailer without stepping up to a full-size truck.
  • Drivers looking for a budget-friendly alternative to the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger while still getting premium features.

Who should consider something else?

  • If you frequently drive on muddy trails, snowy roads, or unpaved paths, upgrading to the Pro-4X with 4WD may be a better option.
  • If you need maximum cargo space, consider a full-size truck like the Nissan Titan or Ford F-150.
  • If fuel economy is your top priority, a smaller turbocharged four-cylinder truck like the Ford Ranger might be more efficient.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-X delivers bold looks, class-leading power, and excellent towing capability—all at a competitive price. With a smoother ride than the Pro-4X, strong utility features, and a comfortable, no-nonsense interior, it’s a great midsize truck for drivers who don’t need off-road capability but still want Nissan’s best equipment and styling.

If you’re in the market for a tough, capable, and well-priced midsize pickup, the Pro-X is definitely worth considering.
