This week, I am driving the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X; the Frontier has had an impressive run in its previous generation, selling over one million trucks in North America between 2004 and 2021. Even in its final years, the aging pickup continued to perform well—accounting for 7% of Nissan’s U.S. sales in 2020. To put that in perspective, the Ford Ranger made up less than 5% of Ford’s total sales, while the segment leader, the Toyota Tacoma, commanded nearly 13% of Toyota’s annual U.S. sales. With numbers like that, Nissan had to get the next-generation 2022 Frontier right.
A North America-Only Nissan Frontier
Unlike previous generations, which shared a platform with international Nissan pickups, the 2022 Nissan Frontier is a North America-exclusive model. While its new bold, rugged design helps it stand out, the real question is: Does the all-new Frontier have what it takes to take on the midsize truck competition?
After spending a week behind the wheel, the answer is yes and no.

2022 Nissan Frontier Pricing & Trim Levels
Starting at $28,990, the base King Cab S model is a few thousand dollars more than rivals like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Chevrolet Colorado. Among mainstream midsize trucks, only the Honda Ridgeline has a higher starting price. However, Nissan doesn’t offer a four-cylinder engine, which explains the higher entry price.
Engine & Performance: The Most Powerful Midsize Truck
Instead of offering multiple engine choices, every 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X is equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque—making it the most powerful midsize truck in the segment. This engine was introduced in 2020 and is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission for improved efficiency and smooth shifting.
The Nissan Frontier Pro-4X, which I tested in Tactical Green, is the top-tier, off-road-focused trim. Fully loaded, it remains more affordable than a base Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, a fact that’s worth noting for serious off-road buyers.
Off-Road Capability: Does the Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Deliver?
The Frontier Pro-4X is built for serious off-roading but keeps things simple and user-friendly. Its traditional suspension and dial-based 4WD system require no learning curve—just select 4-Hi or 4-Lo and go. For those who like the looks but don’t need the offroad capability consider the 2WD Pro-X.
The Nissan Frontier Pro-4X also includes:
- Locking rear differential
- Hill descent control
- Skid plates for added protection
After testing it on and off-road, the Pro-4X holds its own against competitors like the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. Plus, its ride quality is surprisingly comfortable, even on pavement.

Interior & Technology: What’s Missing?
The 2022 Nissan Frontier is available in two body styles (King Cab and Crew Cab) and three main trim levels (S, SV, and Pro-X for 4×2; Pro-4X for 4×4). Popular features are bundled into packages, keeping customization straightforward.
Tech & Connectivity
With NissanConnect, the Frontier includes:
- Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
- Wi-Fi hotspot
- 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system
However, some notable features are missing, even in higher trims:
- No power passenger seat
- No rear air vents
- No advanced cruise control with lane-keeping assist
While these omissions might seem surprising in 2022, the Frontier’s price point and rugged appeal will likely make up for them in the eyes of most buyers.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Worth It?
The all-new 2022 Nissan Frontier delivers a powerful engine, rugged design, and serious off-road capability, making it a strong competitor in the midsize truck market. While it lacks some tech features found in Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet Colorado, it outshines them in horsepower and simplicity. If you’re looking for a capable, no-nonsense midsize pickup, the Frontier Pro-4X is a solid choice.
