In the second installment of our Great American Road Trip series, powered by Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline, we take on one of the most legendary driving routes in Texas: the Twisted Sisters. These scenic yet challenging roads—Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337—are a bucket-list destination for both car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Nestled deep in the Texas Hill Country, this remote route offers breathtaking views, technical switchbacks, and a driving experience unlike any other in the Lone Star State.
For this epic road trip, I secured the keys to a McLaren 720S Spider, courtesy of McLaren North America. With 710 horsepower, this British supercar is more than ready to devour the twists and turns of Texas’ most thrilling roads—while making the most of the performance benefits of Shell V-Power NiTRO+.

Starting in Fredericksburg: Texas Wine Country and Classic Cars
Our journey kicks off in Fredericksburg, a historic town that has evolved into the heart of Texas Wine Country, drawing visitors from around the world. While there are plenty of vineyards to explore, no true gearhead should skip Wine Garage, a unique winery that blends Texas wines with American car culture.
Founded by car collector Gail McCulloch, Wine Garage features a tasting room surrounded by classic cars, neon signs, and vintage memorabilia. Each bottle of wine is named after a vehicle in Gail’s collection, and the wine’s dryness is cleverly rated using a stick shift logo on the back.
Among the stars of the collection are a 1969 Shelby GT500, a 1975 Cadillac Convertible with longhorns mounted on the hood, and countless pieces of automotive history. A wine-tasting experience at Wine Garage includes five curated Texas wines, a souvenir glass, and a chance to explore one of the unique car collections in Texas—all for just $15.
Since I had a long drive ahead, I grabbed a bottle for later and hit the road toward Leakey, home of the Twisted Sisters.

Leakey, Texas: Gateway to the Twisted Sisters
With a population of just over 400 residents, Leakey is a small town that transforms into a hub for bikers and sports car drivers every weekend. It’s also a popular destination for outdoor lovers exploring the Frio River.
To avoid weekend traffic on the Twisted Sisters, I opted to arrive midweek. While this meant clear roads and uninterrupted driving, it also had its downsides—like finding dinner. With most restaurants closed on a Wednesday night, my cameraman and I ended up settling for microwave meals from a local store.
For lodging, we checked into the Historic Leakey Inn, a charming and eclectic collection of cabins dating back to the 1920s. According to the owner, we were the first McLaren drivers to ever check-in—a fun milestone for an already special trip.

Taking on the Twisted Sisters: The Ultimate Texas Driving Experience
Bright and early, we set out to conquer the Twisted Sisters, a roughly 100-mile loop that combines Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337, with a short transit section on Highway 41. If you plan on tackling this route, fuel up with Shell V-Power NiTRO+ before hitting the road—there are no gas stations along the way.
The drive itself is a thrilling mix of tight turns, sweeping elevation changes, and breathtaking canyon views. But don’t get too distracted—the Twisted Sisters is one of the most technical driving roads in Texas, demanding full concentration behind the wheel.
With the McLaren’s exhaust note echoing off the canyon walls, the top down, and the cool Hill Country air rushing past, there’s no better way to spend a morning.

Final Stops: The Bent Rim Grill & Local Car Culture
Completing the loop, Ranch Road 337 leads straight to one of the area’s most famous biker stops: The Bent Rim Grill. According to locals, it serves the best burger in town—a well-earned reward after an intense drive.
Before heading out, I had the chance to meet a local car collector who stores his classic American and Japanese cars in a hidden garage across from the town’s church. True to form, car enthusiasts always seem to find each other. After a quick tour, I offered him a ride in the McLaren 720S—an unforgettable way to cap off the adventure.
