Szanto Automatic Officer Coin Cushion Review

The Officer Coin Cushion case has been a staple of watch style and specifically military watches, for around 100 years; notable cushion case watches include the Rolex 3139, the Oyster Army, which was produced for the allies during WWII, and the Panerai Radiomir, used by the Italian Navy as early as 1936. While some versions of the cushion case have remained in production for decades, the style saw a resurgence in the late 60s and early 70s with watches like the Heuer Camaro and Seiko Monaco.

The Szanto Automatic Officer Coin Cushion, Ref 6201, is inspired by the classic watches of the 1920s-1940s, and it manages to get the detail right. If I was shown this watch and told it retailed for $700 or more I would believe it, the fit and finish are on par with much more expensive watches. The case is polished stainless steel and features an exhibition caseback where you can watch the 21 jewel Miyota movement do its work, all this for just $395.

The Officer Coin Cushion dial is offered in Black, Gold, or Silver. All of them feature a stylized Guilloché sunburst pattern, which gives the watch a classic look when paired with the classic Arabic numerals. The numbers and hands feature a very bright super luminova. In addition to the date complication, the 6201 features a small second hand dial and a 24-hour subdial.

The Japanese-made movement is from the Miyota standard automatic series. It is a 21-jewel movement with a 42-hour power reserve and 21,600 vibrations per hour. The movement is on par with those found in “entry-level” luxury automatic watches that cost hundreds more. It should provide years of reliable service.

Szanto Automatic Officer Coin Cushion Review

Overall I have been impressed with the Szanto watches, they offer a beautifully made, functional watch, with a timeless style that connects to a history more profound than their own. I’ve been wearing the Officer Coin Cushion as my daily watch for a few weeks and like the weight and feel of it on my wrist. The leather strap is comfortable, and when the weather warms up I am going to try it on a NATO strap, which I think will really make it stand out. If you are in the market for a new any of the watches from the Szanto series should be on your shortlist. They currently offer three automatics, the Officers Classic Round, the Big Aviator (currently on sale), and the Officer’s Coin Cushion.
