World of Speed

by Michael Satterfield

There are few automotive museums that I recommend people take the time visit, but World of Speed in Wilsonville, OR should be on your list. Just a short drive outside of Portland the motorsports museum celebrates all motorsports, including drag racing, road racing, land speed racing, motorcycle racing, open-wheel racing, NASCAR, and even hydroplanes.

While several important race cars of national and international note, some of the most interesting exhibits are about local tracks like Woodburn Dragstrip, Jantzen Beach, and Portland International Raceway. Learn about women who have made major contributions to motorsports, drive a racing simulator, or find out what it was like to walk into a 1960s speed shop.

General admission is just $10, with discounts for seniors, students, veterans and active military. Kids 6-12 are $5, and under 5 are free. The museum also hosts a number of special events, car shows, and hosts Portland Cars & Coffee.
