Toyota Carina 1600

While wandering around Managua last week I spotted this 1970s Toyota Carina 1600. Many of my readers in the US will have never seen a Carina as they are fairly rare in the states. The Carina which was designed to fill the gap between the Toyota Corolla and the larger Corona was released just in time for Nixon’s 10% tariff on imports. As a result after just two years, the Carina was discontinued in the US market. However, Central America was more than happy to buy Japanese cars which had already had a great reputation for durability and reliability thanks to the go-anywhere Toyota FJ.
