The 1946 Alfa Romeo 412 Spider Vignale Replica, auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in 2016, stands as a remarkable homage to a rare and enigmatic piece of automotive history. Crafted to emulate the original Alfa Romeo 412 Spider designed by Carrozzeria Vignale, this replica captures the essence of a vehicle whose authentic counterpart has long been lost to time.

412 Spider Vignale: A Tribute to a Lost Icon

The original Alfa Romeo 412 Spider was a unique creation, built in the late 1930s with a V12 engine derived from the 12C-37 Grand Prix car, mounted on an 8C 2900 A chassis. Only four units were produced, and of those, just two were completed. The car’s design, attributed to Vignale, showcased the coachbuilder’s flair for combining elegance with performance. Unfortunately, the original 412 Spider disappeared after 1958, leaving behind scant photographic evidence and a legacy shrouded in mystery.

The Replica’s Emergence

The replica that surfaced at RM Sotheby’s “Duemila Ruote” auction in Milan was built on a 1946 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 chassis, bearing the chassis number 913346 and engine number 923886. While not an exact reproduction, the car was meticulously crafted to mirror the aesthetics of the original 412 Spider, featuring a red exterior and tan leather interior that exuded vintage charm.

Surprising Auction Success

Initially estimated to fetch between €30,000 and €35,000, the replica defied expectations by selling for €302,400 at the auction held from November 25 to 27, 2016. This impressive result underscored the car’s appeal to collectors and enthusiasts, despite its status as a replica.

Legal Considerations

At the time of the auction, the vehicle was under an order of seizure, a situation that RM Sotheby’s addressed by coordinating with the appointed administrator to ensure the release of the seizure upon payment. Additionally, the auction house applied for a duplicate copy of the Italian Libretto (registration document), which was expected to be received within eight weeks after the sale.

Legacy and Significance

The 1946 Alfa Romeo 412 Spider Vignale Replica serves as a testament to the enduring allure of classic automotive design and the passion of enthusiasts dedicated to preserving automotive history. While the original 412 Spider remains lost, this replica offers a tangible connection to a bygone era, allowing admirers to experience a semblance of the elegance and innovation that characterized the golden age of coachbuilt automobiles.
