I have been doing some exploring along Route 66 in California, and I came across the Red Chief Motel, a traditional Route 66 1930’s auto lodge. The front building was a cafe and cocktail lounge just located just down from the Sycamore Inn in what was then unincorporated Cucamonga. More like apartments than a Motel each bungalow included a kitchen and a garage.

Today only the main building stands and is home to Gao Sushi, the traditional facade has been covered up by wood panels in an attempt to make the building look more modern. I just wonder what happened to the original sign.

A satellite view shows the original driveway loop that was once lined with bungalows motel rooms.

You can visit the building or grab some Sushi at:

8270 E Foothill Blvd
Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730
