1986 Porsche 962 Race Car to be Auctioned in Monterey

The Porsche 962 is one of those cars that just keeps going, raced from 1984 through the mid-90’s the car was popular with factory-backed teams and privateers alike. The 962 debuted at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1984 with Mario and Michael Andretti driving for the factory, they led the race until they were forced to retire during lap 127 due to mechanical problems.

For 1987 Porsche brought in a new engine, a more durable and powerful 3.0 L unit which powered the car to an overall win at the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans, Porsche’s record seventh consecutive victory at the race. Businessman and racer Jochen Dauer got the 962 re-classified as a road-legal GT1 and campaigned it in the 1994 24 Hours of Le Mans.
