It’s been around for a few years, but the Genesis G70 has been a serious contender in the compact sports luxury sedan segment. Genesis infused their G70 with a twin-turbocharged V6, a luxurious interior, and sleek bodylines. Competition in this segment is tight and the G70 has a lot of steep competition. For 2024, Genesis gave the G70 interior and exterior improvements. Let’s see if the G70 is still one of the best in the segment.

When Genesis redesigned the exterior of the G70 for 2022, it transformed it from a dull to a good-looking sedan. At the front, a large Genesis crest grille on a slightly bulging hood is surrounded by quad LED headlights. The oversized grille looks good since it tapers down, but housing the safety systems behind it results in a black piece of plastic. Even painted in a more subdue Vatna Gray, the G70 shows well-creased body lines. As the Sport Prestige, this G70 wore 19-inch sport alloy wheels. The rear end features similar-looking quad tail lights, a large Genesis badge written out, and various badging.

When you step inside, the first thing you see is the beautiful red leather with lovely stitching and red seatbelts. There's a cool start-up and exit display on the infotainment system. For the steering wheel, you have your buttons for your adaptive cruise control and media in front of you. There’s a traditional speedometer dial on the left along with a digital tachometer dial on the right, and when we start up, you'll see that there's a little center display where you can get your trip computer all your with this model, including a bright head-up display. Now go into the climate control you do have physical knobs, but you now have a little touch screen to do this now there is no haptic feedback which would be nice if not the most difficult system, but I miss the physical switches before the refresh. The good is there are a few shortcut buttons for defrosting, putting the climate control in auto, or turning it off.

The screen is a little small by modern standards at 10.25 inches. It’s not difficult to use but it would be nice if it didn't always default to a home screen because. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, but it is wired with a USB-A. Thankfully, the comfortable seats are heated and cooled seats I can attest to the cold seats they're really good. To the right of the driver is a traditional model shifter, you have the drive mode and a very easy location and along with your auto hold your camera turn the traction control off, and automatic parking.  Drive modes include Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. The exhaust gets louder in sport mode steering gets a little bit more firm throttle. One of the biggest complaints comes from the cramped rear seat and a slightly small powered tailgate and red seatbelts always look good and then you have a 12-Volt socket along with USB-A and you have a wireless charger so it is a very luxurious cabin, a little old on technology which if that matters to you, a BMW M340I which has a much bigger screen it has gesture controls.

Under the hood is a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 producing 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft. Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD, the 0-60 MPH time is 4.5 seconds. That’s quick, but other manufacturers can be significantly quicker while having much better fuel economy because you can get even in sedate driving, you’ll get 20 MPG and if you drive it a little rougher, expect 17-18 MPH. Handling is taught and the G70 takes corners well, but there’s a problem with the brakes. There seems to be a dead spot at the top of the pedal and braking takes getting used to. I’m hoping Genesis either upgrades the Brembo brakes or something else to fix the braking.

Safety features come in the forms of adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keep monitoring, and forward-mitigation warning. Music comes from a Lexicon sound system with plenty of treble and base. The span of the G70 line starts with a base 2.5T with rear-wheel drive and starts around $43,000. This top-of-the-line G70 3.3T AWD Sport Prestige is close to $60,000, but that’s not too bad. The BMW M340i starts at almost $60,000 and is over $6,000 more than the G70 equipped almost spec-for-spec. Unsurprisingly, you get most of the German competition for a discount.

Does that mean Genesis G70 isn’t as good as the competition? For the most part, it’s on par. It’s not missing too much technology, but the screen is a little small for modern standards. Still, the Genesis G70 is one of the best luxury sports sedans on the road and is still highly recommended.
