We have always liked the CX-50 since we drove 2022 back to back from the press launch to the Texas Motor Press Off-Road Invitational. The 2024 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus is still a refined take on what a compact SUV can offer in the crowded midsize SUV segment. Positioned as a sportier, more rugged sibling to the CX-5, the CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus aims to capture the spirit of adventure without sacrificing Mazda's signature driving dynamics and upscale feel. In this review, we'll explore how Mazda's approach to design, engineering, and technology culminates in a vehicle that appeals to those who seek versatility and driving pleasure in equal measure.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus is a striking vehicle that embraces Mazda's Kodo design philosophy, which emphasizes the beauty of motion. At first glance, the CX-50 stands out with its bold and athletic stance. Wider and lower than the CX-5, the CX-50 exudes a sense of purpose, with pronounced wheel arches, a long hood, and a sweeping roofline that give it a more aggressive profile. The Turbo Premium Plus trim adds exclusive details, such as 20-inch alloy wheels, gloss black accents, and a subtly revised front grille that enhances its premium appeal.

Mazda's attention to detail is evident in the design elements that make the CX-50 both stylish and functional. The LED headlights and taillights feature a distinct signature lighting pattern that’s instantly recognizable, while the available roof rails and rugged cladding hint at the vehicle's off-road capability. Despite its rugged appearance, the CX-50 doesn't stray far from Mazda's refined aesthetic. The overall design is clean and cohesive, with a minimalist approach that feels both modern and timeless.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 Is Still A Great Choice

Step inside the 2024 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus, and you're greeted by an interior that strikes a perfect balance between luxury and practicality. Mazda has elevated the cabin experience with high-quality materials and a design that feels both driver-focused and welcoming. The Turbo Premium Plus trim takes things up a notch with Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof that floods the cabin with natural light.

Mazda's designers have paid close attention to the layout and ergonomics of the interior. The dashboard is uncluttered, with controls that are intuitive and easy to reach. The 10.25-inch center display is seamlessly integrated into the dash and features Mazda's latest infotainment system, which is controlled via a rotary dial. This setup may take some getting used to for those accustomed to touchscreen interfaces, but it ultimately contributes to a distraction-free driving experience.

Space is another strong point for the CX-50. While it shares a similar footprint with the CX-5, the CX-50's slightly larger dimensions translate into more interior room, especially in the rear seats. Passengers will appreciate the generous legroom and the comfort of the supportive seats, making the CX-50 a great choice for longer journeys. The cargo area is also commendable, with a flat load floor and 31.4 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, which expands to 59.8 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

Mazda is known for its focus on driving dynamics, and the 2024 CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus is no exception. Under the hood, the Turbo Premium Plus is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that delivers 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when running on premium fuel. These figures are impressive for the segment and provide the CX-50 with plenty of power for both city driving and highway cruising.

What truly sets the CX-50 apart is how it handles. Mazda's engineers have done an exceptional job tuning the suspension to strike a balance between comfort and agility. The CX-50 feels planted and composed on twisty roads, with minimal body roll and responsive steering that provides excellent feedback. This makes the CX-50 one of the most engaging compact SUVs to drive, a rare trait in a segment dominated by vehicles that prioritize comfort over driving pleasure.

The Turbo Premium Plus trim also includes Mazda's i-Activ all-wheel-drive system, which is standard across the CX-50 lineup. This system constantly monitors road conditions and adjusts power delivery to ensure optimal traction, whether you're driving on a rain-soaked highway or navigating a gravel trail. The CX-50 also features Mazda's Off-Road mode, which modifies the drivetrain settings for improved performance on uneven surfaces. While it's not a hardcore off-roader, the CX-50 is more than capable of handling light off-road adventures, making it a versatile option for those who enjoy the occasional escape from the pavement.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 Is Still A Great Choice

Mazda has equipped the 2024 CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus with a comprehensive suite of technology and features that enhance both convenience and safety. The centerpiece of the infotainment system is the aforementioned 10.25-inch display, which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both of which can be connected wirelessly. The system is paired with a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system that delivers crisp and immersive sound quality, making it a joy to listen to your favorite music or podcasts on the road.

One of the highlights of the CX-50 is Mazda's Active Driving Display, a head-up display that projects important information, such as speed, navigation directions, and safety alerts, directly onto the windshield. This feature helps keep the driver's eyes on the road, enhancing both convenience and safety. The Turbo Premium Plus trim also includes a 360-degree view monitor, which provides a bird's-eye view of the vehicle's surroundings, making parking and maneuvering in tight spaces easier.

When it comes to safety, the CX-50 is equipped with a wide range of driver-assistance features as part of Mazda's i-Activsense suite. This includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking. These systems work together seamlessly to provide an extra layer of protection, making the CX-50 a reassuring vehicle to drive in a variety of conditions.

Given the performance capabilities of the 2024 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus, its fuel economy is respectable. The EPA rates the CX-50 Turbo at 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. While these numbers are slightly lower than some of its competitors, they are on par with other turbocharged engines in the segment. The CX-50's efficiency is further aided by Mazda's Skyactiv technology, which optimizes the engine, transmission, and chassis for maximum performance and fuel savings.

For those who prioritize fuel efficiency, Mazda also offers a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine option in lower trims, which provides better fuel economy at the expense of power. However, for those who value the additional performance and versatility offered by the turbocharged engine, the slight trade-off in efficiency is well worth it.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 Is Still A Great Choice

Behind the wheel of the 2024 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus, it's easy to see why Mazda continues to earn praise for its commitment to driving enjoyment. The turbocharged engine provides strong acceleration, with a surge of power that's readily available at low and mid-range RPMs. This makes merging onto highways or passing slower traffic a breeze. The six-speed automatic transmission, while not as advanced as some of the eight-speed or CVT options found in competitors, is smooth and responsive, with well-timed shifts that contribute to the vehicle's sporty character.

The CX-50's driving dynamics are a standout feature. The suspension is tuned to provide a firm yet comfortable ride, absorbing road imperfections without feeling overly soft. On winding roads, the CX-50 is remarkably composed, with precise steering that makes it feel more like a sports sedan than a compact SUV. This level of engagement is rare in the segment and is a testament to Mazda's dedication to delivering a superior driving experience.

The all-wheel-drive system inspires confidence in adverse conditions, providing excellent traction and stability. Whether navigating a rain-soaked highway or venturing onto a gravel road, the CX-50 feels surefooted and capable. The Off-Road mode is a welcome addition for those who enjoy exploring unpaved trails, though it's important to note that the CX-50 is not designed for extreme off-roading. Instead, it excels at light adventures that take you off the beaten path but keep you close to civilization.

In real-world use, the CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus proves to be a versatile companion. The spacious interior accommodates passengers and cargo with ease, making it well-suited for family trips or weekend getaways. The panoramic sunroof enhances the cabin's airy feel, while the Nappa leather seats provide comfort during long drives. The tech features, including the head-up display and wireless smartphone integration, add convenience and make the CX-50 a joy to live with on a daily basis.

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus is a compelling option in the compact SUV segment, offering a unique blend of style, performance, and versatility. Mazda has successfully created a vehicle that appeals to both driving enthusiasts and those who value practicality, making the CX-50 a standout choice for a wide range of buyers.

The CX-50's design is both rugged and refined, with an interior that exudes quality and comfort. The turbocharged engine delivers strong performance, while the all-wheel-drive system and Off-Road mode provide the capability to explore beyond the pavement. Mazda's commitment to driving dynamics ensures that the CX-50 is not just another compact SUV, but a vehicle that engages and excites the driver.
