Adam Driver stars as Enzo Ferrari in the movie "Ferrari," portraying an extraordinary personality who designs racecars with a remarkable combination of elegance and potency. Set mainly in 1957, the film delves into a tumultuous period in Enzo's life, where he experiences both professional success and personal struggles. Despite being sought after by kings, he has to deal with financial turmoil and complicated relationships with two women. Director Michael Mann skillfully navigates these contrasting narratives, offering an insight into Enzo's multifaceted persona.

While the movie did come out in 2023, I hadn't had a chance to sit down and watch it yet, so I ordered it up on Amazon, which started streaming it in late January of 2024, and settled in. One of my favorite aspects of the film is the period-correct clothing, helmets, and accessories, many of which were made by our friend Danilo Coto Cruz of Pacto Vintage Helmet.

The movie showcases Enzo's stoicism and determination in exhilarating races and intimate domestic moments. It also explores his vulnerabilities and contradictions in his personal life. Mann skillfully weaves together the threads of Enzo's life, juxtaposing his relentless pursuit of success with moments of introspection and emotional turmoil.

Penélope Cruz plays Enzo's wife Laura, imbuing her character with a mixture of resilience and bitterness. Shailene Woodley portrays Lina, Enzo's mistress, as a steadfast presence amidst his tumultuous existence.

Although the film's focus on Enzo's achievements and failures is captivating, it occasionally struggles to fully humanize its protagonist. Mann's intense focus on Enzo's inner workings can leave the audience feeling detached from the character, with Driver's portrayal serving as a captivating yet enigmatic centerpiece.

"Ferrari" captivates viewers with its gripping narrative and exhilarating racing sequences, showcasing Mann's adeptness at capturing the thrill of the sport. As Enzo navigates the highs and lows of his tumultuous life, the film offers a compelling exploration of ambition, sacrifice, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Worth streaming, but be warned, there are a few graphic scenes involving motorsports accidents that you may find disturbing.
