In a world where brands are jumping on the electrification bandwagon, the Full-Size SUV segment stands defiant, embracing its classic essence of oversized frames, powerful engines, and generous space. Enter the 2023 Nissan Armada, an unapologetic behemoth equipped with a 400-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 engine that devours gasoline with a voracious appetite. It is the polar opposite of the all-electric Nissan Ariya, which is marketed to people who can't even pronounce its name without the help of D-list celebrities. But make no mistake, for the right kind of buyer, there is no substitute for a classic full-size SUV. It possesses the might to tow up to 8,500 pounds, accommodates eight souls with ease, and glides through nearly any terrain effortlessly. And oh, the luxuriously plush cabin, that has been nicely updated.
While we have traversed the highways and embarked on extended road trips with the Armada, our recent expedition with the Texas Motor Press Association granted us the opportunity to venture off-road. Surprisingly, this fully loaded-luxury SUV performed admirably. The slower steering makes more sense in the untamed wilderness, and the 4x4 system dutifully assists the driver in maintaining control over the Nissan's unruly spirit. We took on every part of the trail, sans the water crossing since it wasn't equipped with the most off-road-worthy tires.
This hefty, body-on-frame SUV, rooted in a decade-old platform, immediately places the Nissan at a disadvantage compared to its more progressive adversaries. Nevertheless, the Armada possesses its own set of skills. A softly sprung vehicle, this mammoth Nissan glides along the highway with a whisper, as we made our way to Aggieland Safari, adeptly absorbing imperfections in the Bryan, Texas road surface for the most part. When it comes to twists? Well, let's just say the new Nissan Armada SUV fails to impress under such circumstances. Swift directional changes expose its vague steering, proclivity to body roll, and feeble body control. Of course, we aren't expecting the lightning-quick responses of a Nissan Z car, but the Armada remains a lumbering giant in its own right.
For the 2023 model year, Nissan has bestowed a few additional standard features upon the Armada, although its fundamental nature remains unchanged. Alongside the base S trim, all other variants now boast Amazon Alexa Built-in, allowing drivers to command their tunes or make calls with a simple vocal utterance. The SV trim receives the gift of remote engine start, LED front fog lights, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror, while the SL trim graciously offers a heated steering wheel to combat those chilly mornings.
Admittedly, the Armada's age prevents it from soaring to the apex of its class. Yet, there's something to be said for an SUV built on trusted mechanicals that won't leave you stranded in the wilderness. With its tried and true V8 powerplant and robust underpinnings, the Armada beckons as an appealing choice for long-term ownership, thanks in part to the various updates it has received over the years, ensuring its freshness amidst the evolving landscape. We cannot deny our admiration for its opulent interior and serene ride. However, it must be noted that several of its Nissan Armada competitors in the USA exude a more modern aura, both in their appearance and feel. Let us not forget that the thirsty V8 engine demands a considerable price at the pump, making the Armada a costlier endeavor to maintain. And navigating winding roads can prove tiresome, as its massive frame struggles to maneuver with agility. Furthermore, while the Armada boasts a third-row seating arrangement, which is perfect for small children or adults you don't like.
But even with its share of shortcomings, the colossal Nissan Armada remains an indomitable force worthy of consideration, particularly when considering its attractive starting price. It may not boast the latest innovations or the sleek aesthetics of its rivals, but it possesses an undeniable allure that resonates with those who seek resilience and dependability.
In a world that is rapidly evolving, where trends and technologies come and go like fleeting dreams, there's something to be said for a steadfast companion that can weather the storm. The Nissan Armada, with its rugged spirit and unwavering performance, stands as a testament to durability and unwavering strength.
