Robert MacKenzie is well known in the world of Triumph sports cars, campaigning one of the oldest production Triumph Spitfires in vintage racing events with CVRA and SVRA racing clubs. I first met Robert when we were planning the Groesbeck Grand Prix, he had planned to bring his 1962 Spitfire to the event, but with COVID-19 his doctors advised that he not attend. At the time Robert had just finished treatment for cancer, a life-changing ordeal that also inspired him to give back through his favorite hobby.
The sporty little car represented an epoch for each owner, for the previous owner selling the Spitfire came at the conclusion of a tumultuous time, for Robert the car represents a brighter future and hope for the future. The car has undergone a recent reconstruction, I wouldn't call it a restoration, since the car has been significantly altered from its original state, but it is a well sorted and very unique classic Spitfire.
The 1978 Spitfire was originally exported and sold new in California, in Leyland White with Beige interior, since Robert has owned it the car has been outfitted with a number of improvements including coil-over suspension, larger TR8 wheels wrapped in performance tires, slotted brake rotors, and performance pads, anti-roll bars, aluminum radiator, and electric fans. The engine was rebuilt with a performance camshaft, with a lightened flywheel and crank pulley, the car also has a new clutch. To improve driveability and safety the electronics were upgraded including a modern GM alternator, Pertronix ignition system, and LED running lights/turn signals in the front.
You could be the next owner of this special car and make a big impact on the lives of those who are fighting cancer, so be sure to watch for it on Bring a Trailer and check out more photos and information on the car HERE.
